Intel RS2BL080 Transient Error?

Hi All,

Before i detail the issue; i'll start with the specs of my system

RAID Controller - Intel RS2BL080
RAID Expander - Intel RES2SV240
Hard Drives - 20x Seagate ST3000DM001

Configuration - 10x 3TB RAID6 + 10x 3TB RAID6

The Intel RAID Web Console keeps reporting 3 issues...

1. Controller ID: 0 Unexpected sense: PD = 13-Invalid field in CDB, CDB = 0x5a 0x00 0x1c 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0xfc 0x00, Sense = 0x70 0x00 0x05 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x0a 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x24 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00

(Every 5 - 30 seconds)

(Every 10 minutes or so)

One of the drives was dropped a couple of days ago... I pulled the drive and replaced wit ha brand new one only to have that drive dropped too... Both drives have now passed 4 full 0 fill read/writes with no bad sectors... The drive was then moved to another port and it seems okay (not being dropped) but i keep getting this issues in RWC2...

I've tried different cables today, but still the sames issues...

Any ideas?

some of the intel sas expander cages have problems using drives at 6Gbps. (WD RE drives especially) The fix for me was to jumper the drive down to 3Gbps, and then it worked fine.

I would have unexpected senses at random, and occasionally a raid dropout.
 
I know I'm a few months late to the party, but…

I am seeing the exact same issues. Well, very close. I am using the raid as backup so it only gets written to when I'm doing a big rsync. During such copies, I see the unexpected sense errors multiple times per minute and the transient error probably once every 10 minutes or so. I see these errors only on one of 4 drives (all identical) in a raid-10. I also have an RS2BL080 and I'm using 4TB WD black drives: WD4003FZEX. Apparently WD black drives (despite being higher-end than red) are not recommended for use in RAID - wish I had known that sooner.

I did find a page about how to jumper a different SATA drive down to 3 Gb/s (http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=685&pgno=3), but I'm not sure if the same applies for all 6 Gb/s SATA drives or for this drive in particular. I will try the fix if I can.

To follow up (for future readers), I went ahead and jumpered pins 5 and 6 on the drive that was getting errors. Afterward the raid software reported that the disk drive speed and negotiated link speed were both 3 Gb/s (still 6 Gb/s on the unjumpered disks). And guess what… All of the warnings disappeared. The danged fix totally works! Thanks!!!

I went ahead and jumpered the rest of the drives in the array for good measure. I'm still not sure exactly where the problem lies. The Intel guys think it's an issue with the enclosure. At this point I don't care. The raid is behaving properly and I don't need the 6 Gb/s speed. So now that I have resolved (or at least worked around) the issue, I'm leaving it alone.
