I have completely lost my freaking mind... I am trying to use this card as just a passthrough expander for 8 SATA drives but no matter what freaking driver I use during the install of W2K8_R2 Ent Full Install it will not see the drives. I can make them all individual volumes and the installation sees them but if I leave them uncatagorized the card isn't working as a pass through...

Anyone feel like easing my suffering on a Friday afternoon by telling me whatever obvious thing I have missed... :(
 
The card is a RAID card, not an HBA. Basically you have to make single disk volumes from all drives. There was a way for LSI2108 cards to enable JBOD mode (single-disk passthrough), but I think LSI does not support that for the LSI2208 based cards. After all you only gain the benefit of the controller cache for "RAID-mode" disks, but not for passthrough disks.
 
I use these cards and they will pass through drives as JBOD however, they are a RAID card, not a HBA (as mentioned above) or EXPANDER.

Open the Intel RAID config tools and see what it says.
