Intel refreshing desktop CPUS

Intel is planning a “technical refresh” of their desktop CPUs this year, with certain cuts planned for the third quarter. In particular, some of the earlier Core 2 Quad CPUs will be phased out, such as the Core 2 Quad 9450. It will be succeeded by the Core 2 Quad 9400. They also are planning to phase out the Q9300 and Q6700, in an effort to move away from the 65nm process as 45nm CPUs are introduced. The 9400 will sit at a very affordable price of $266 after the change.

As older CPUs are removed, newer CPUs will replace them. The Core 2 Quad 9650 will be a pricier and faster CPU at 3GHz and $530. Intel is also planning various cuts in their Core 2 Duo lineup as well. The CPU refreshes are expected year after year, though this is one of the first years we see a refresh that makes no mention of single-core processors as Intel moves away from them altogether.

refreshes are cool. more expensive refreshes and less options (cpus in a lineup) are not imo. I just hope intel doesnt go back to hiking the price up on their cpus anytime soon now that amd is having a hard time

The interesting thing is that they are not discontinuing the Q6600. I guess that says something about the success of this chip.

Not only is it Not Going Away, it's shedding a third of its price ($203, down $63); however, Q6700 IS Going Away (replaced by a new Yorkfield, Q9400, which bows at the old $266 price Q6600 used to have). Result, we have a Yorkfield Hammer and a Kentsfield Anvil. (You Guessed It; with Phenom, both triple-core *and* quad-core, In Da Middle.)

Anyone have any idea when we see the price drops? I hear Q3 starts in July... is that when the prices should drop?

At places like Newegg you probably won't see the price drops until a few weeks later.

I'm not a huge fan of them replacing the Q9450 with a chip that has half the cache, doesn't that seem kind of crappy to anyone else?

I guess replacing it with the Q9550 makes up a bit, but still...

I thought the Q6600 already dropped to $22x, and the Q6700 took its place at $266, so the new price for Q6600 should only be some 20 dollars lower.

For Intel, I think, their third fiscal quarter starts in July (the U.S. government operates on a different fiscal calendar--for them, we're in 3Q now).

Damn, though--the Q9550 dropping to around $300? If I'm going to upgrade from my Q6600 to anything, that's it...

That's what im waiting on too. I was about to pull the trigger on a Q6600 but I think waiting another 30-45 days for a significant price drop on the 9550 is worth it (I don't OC)

I just hope we get better stock of the 9550's soon.. they aren't in at the egg or really anywhere
