intel rapid storage technology problems

Ok thinking about just disabling the whole fucking thing

gigabyte ga-z68m-d2h
intel i5 2500 stock speeds
8GB Mushkin ehanced blackline ram
WD black 2tb drive
80GB intel ssd for cache

the problem i first had was when i stupidly decided to remove the 40GB ssd originally in there as a cache drive (had the 80 sitting around)..

i synchronized the drive and disabled ssd caching and restarted the computer
windows would hang on startup...couldn't run windows recovery or even enter into safe mode. it would hang on classpnp.sys

reformatted and reinstalled windows and everything seems to be running great until i have to restart windows for the first time after installing the irst drivers.
upon boot up at the part where the raid controller is detecting the hardware acceleration is highlighted in yellow and says disabled

it takes about 20 minutes to get into windows (after multiple restarts sometimes it says OS not found sometimes it hangs at the windows logo for about 4 or 5 minutes) and when it finally does get into windows irst is not running and it still shows up as not running.

That sounds like a great idea. With a little infrequent maintenance, you can decide for yourself which files would stay on the SSD and which can be shuttered off to the hard disk.

I guess I'm just against the concept altogether, so I might be a bit biased.
 
I gota say that Intel's use of IRST and ISRT can be very confusing and I have to look them up after not using them every few weeks.

I assume you talking about ISRT (Intel Smart Response Tech), i.e. caching. It is an older technology designed a few years ago when SSDs were small and very expensive. Realize that it only works when the OS is on a HDD and that appears to be your setup.

IRST (Intel Rapid Storage Tech) really is built for RAID although it must be running to gain access to ISRT. I've found that IRST is very sensitive to missing drives and can result in BSOD on boot when it expects a drive to be there or something changed. Have you totally turned IRST off then booted and got it running? Next turning IRST on and activated "Acceleration", i.e. caching?

Frankly with an 80G SSD I would install OS on it and never use caching again. 80G is a good size for Windows 7 or any smaller OS.

Yeah, SRT is cool and all, and I even picked up the Intel 311 20GB SLC drive to use for it, but I don't fancy putting mechanical storage in my system ever again.

But if you're experimenting, it might be cool to put the OS on the 80GB and cache the storage drive with the 40GB if you can -- RST will allow it but Dataplex caching solutions don't and must be used on the system drive. Honestly, I don't think it's worth the headaches, but I've been meaning to try it... just to say I did.
