This is purely for curiosities sake but is an on-board Intel RAID 5 or 10 set bootable? Will it do a hot spare and automatic rebuild?

I haven't been able to find any performance numbers on X99 RAID 5 or 10 builds using SSDs. A cold site box of 6-10 SSDs on X99 or C612 would be incredibly cheap compared to a spare SAN.

Yes both are bootable. I am not sure of hot spares because I never had a hot spare. Darn HP motherboard choose to only connect 4 of the 6 SATA ports of the chipset. I am currently typing from a 4 year old HP i7 860 machine with Intel raid. Last year I reformatted it to intel raid5 with the switch to windows 8.1. Although after beta test of primo cache was over I highly regretted that decision because the performance with 3 7200 RPM 1TB SATA hard drives was abysmal (compared to linux software raid5 - which I have used for nearly 15 years now) even with the write back cache enabled. This year I reformatted it to raid10 using clonezilla (clone raid5 to network drive then clone back to raid10 array) and performance is fine.
