hey i'm lolking at intel processors and i'm SOOOO confused on the order of top to bottom and how it works? i saw EE and hT EE then is aw 840E E and i'm just so confused!! can someone enlighten me?

Here we go: (desktop line)

955EE (dual core, Presler, HT, 1066 FSB)
950 (dual core, Presler, no HT, 800 FSB)
Then the rest of the 9xx series, just get slower as the numbers go down, but all are dual core, no HT, and 800 FSB.

The 800 series is the old version of the current 900 series, you don't want those chips. They are prescott core, run very hot, and don't OC nearly as well as the 900 does.

After that you have the 600 series, which is single core, with HT, and 2MB L2 cache.

Under that there is the 500 series, single core, most have HT, and 1MB L2 cache.

If you are buying a new Intel chip now, your best bet is to get a 920 and OC it. They are hitting 4.5 Ghz easy on stock air, and with dual cores, you can afford to lose the HT.

EDIT: for the rest....

Mobile Line:

Core Duo (dual core, Yonah, fastest mobile chip on the market from any company, and excellent battery life, runs cool)
Core Solo (single core, Yonah)
Pentium M - Dothan (not quite as quick as Yonah, but excellent battery life, runs cool)
Pentium M - Banias (similar to Dothan, less cache)
Pentium4 M (more power hungry, and slower clock for clock than the above)

Intel also still makes the Celerons in both Desktop and Mobile variants. Celeron Ds OC very well, just have not much cache. Mobile Celerons lack some of the power management features of the mobile Pentium M.

HT is important on single core chips, but less so on dual-core. When you have a dual-core chip you have two physical cores, so multitasking is greatly improved, you can use two CPU-heavy programs at the same time with no slowdown. As 4-way SMP isn't quite primtime yet, Dual Core + HT (2 physical cores and 2 virtual cores) isn't really a big deal.

EE is Extreme Edition, Intel's name for whatever its top of the line CPU is at the moment. Currently it is the 955EE, which has dual cores, hyperthreading (it is the only 9xx series CPU with hyperthreading), and a faster FSB (1066 Mhz vs, 800 Mhz). It also has the highest price. A 920 (dual core, but no HT) OCed to similar speeds of the 955EE should perform very close to it.

EDIT:

EE is a marketing thing, HT is a technology. Consider EE to be Intel's parallel to AMD's FX line, the 955EE is Intel's FX60.
 
so although EE + HT would be great it is not applicable fully yet and it's like dual core + ht?

so i if i go the intel line should look for something like HT? and what's pentium D and what's Pentium's equivalent to a64 x2 (dual core? or is that ee?) ... i've been on the Athlon side for my last two computers so i'm so out of how intel works and i'm trying to see which one i want when i build my sweet system for going off to college + oblivion (game)

EE is Dual Core + HT (at least for now). Previously, there were EE chips that were single core.

Pentium D is Pentium 4 dual core. The 900 series (920, 930, 940, 950, 955EE) is Intel's current dual-core lineup, and the equivalent of the X2 line. The 920 is an incredible value, it can be had for a little more than $250, and OCs up to 4.5Ghz on air easy, at which point it is beating an X2 4800+. Give it water or crazy air solutions and 5Ghz+ should be attainable.

If OCing isn't your think, the 950 is a very fast chip, and a little more than half the price of the 955EE, which yes, is not needed for anything currently.

There are also Pentium Ds in the 800 series, but avoid those chips, they are 90 nm and run a lot hotter and don't OC as well, their memory bus/cache is also different and not as efficient.

HT is like having psuedo-dual core, AMD doesn't have an equivalent. HT is something added to single core chips to give them some of the benefits of dual core, but true dual core is better than HT.

First, EE stands for Extreme Edition. An EE processor is Intel's fastest (you also pay through the nose for it). HT is hyperthreading, it is similar to Dual-Core, but not the same. With dual-core you have two CPUs, so you can do two very demanding tasks at once (like you can encode a video and play a game at the same time no problem). Hyperthreading takes one CPU and makes it behave like two. What results is that Windows feels smoother, but you can't do two intensive things at once. Hyperthreading makes your computer feel smooth, dual-core means you can do two things at once.

AMD doesn't have hyperthreading. They only have regular (non-hyperthreaded) CPUs, or they have dual-cores.

okay so if i'm getting this rihgt.
pentium 4obviously is pentium4 then it goes pentium D for dual core then pentium with hyperthreading is single chip but makes it act smoother but it isn't dual core and can't do multitasking tons of stuff and Pentium D is dual core?? pentium D is a64 x2's equivalent?

I know all the links are to Intel's site, but that should get you started. There are numerous articles on the +/- of hyperthreading, but if you were going dual core you shouldn't worry about not having it. The 900 series is the current way to go IMO.

The numbers are model numbers, Intel went to a model number scheme instead of Ghz this past year.

Basically, this is the order in which you would want the chips:

Pentium EE (dual core and HT, but you pay out the ass for it, not worth it IMO)
Pentium D (true dual core, goes against the X2, no HT, but it doesn't need it)
Pentium 4 HT (single core, but smoother and can multitask a bit better)
Pentium 4 (no HT, single core, no reason to buy this chip)

that's basicaly what i was saying but i din't put it in list form so it was major confusing. i think i understand now.. BUT for Extreme Edition is always the newest processor out or is it truly pentium EE?

Again, the EE isn't always the newest, and there have beem multiple EE editions. To top that off, sometimes the EE performs worse due to apps getting confused by the HT. The only desktop Intel proc you should want now is the P4 920, that is, if you are willing to overclock.
 
well the Pentium D sounds promisng and P4 940 or whatever you said (sorry i don't remember the number) is P4 w/ HT?
 
If you're going Intel then 920d is the best bang for your buck, 4ghz w/ stock cooler with just a slight bump in voltage is pretty nice.
 
i don't plan on overclocking.. definetly since i'm going to get a silverstone sugo sg-1 ... small matx mobo case.

No the 900 series doesn't have HT, but they are dual core, so you don't need it.

The 600 series is single core with HT. Honestly, OCing is incredibly easy with the new 65nm Intel chips, you'd be dumb not to at least bump it a little.
 
Think of dual-core versus hyperthreading as Velveeta versus real Cheddar Cheese. Hyperthreading is like the Velveeta: it mimicks the real deal, but it cannot replace it. Dual-Core is like the Cheddar Cheese: it's the real deal, and your going to pay extra for it.
 
i uyndersatnd now i just have to decide what procesor to get.. amd 64,x2 or pentium D or a HT version. Not sure haha. ill have to research on my own those four proc types.

Don't buy a single core CPU anymore. If you don't plan to OC, buy an X2. If you want to save a lot of cash and are willing to OC, buy a 920.

This man speaks the truth. If you want good solid performance without overclocking, X2 3800+ all the way. If you want a processor you can overclock well past 4GHz, then Intel Pentium D 920.
 
mmmm but couldn't the high-end single core cpu run better than the "middle" x2 cpu... ?? and that's what it would be liek i THINK. If i did a64 or D i'd probably get the higher end lik a64 4000+ but if i got x2 i'd be 3800+.

You would be a lot happier with the dual core imo.

also which dual core series is better to OC (not rihgt away but maybe a few months after i make hte system) intel or amd?

Intel CPUs will overclock to higher frequencies (duh) and usually you'll get a higher percentage gain. The real-world difference between a 2.6GHz X2 and a 4GHz PD are yet to be determined.

At the risk of provoking a flamewar, I would like to say you should buy AMD. Even if the Pentium D 920 is cheap (and it is...$260 is excellent) you need to buy a motherboard that has the Intel 975X chipset, and these boards are around or over $200, IIRC. That would be roughly $460 for the processor and motherboard. If you go with AMD, the X2 3800+ is sitting at $315 right now. That will give you $145 to spend on a motherboard, which could easily get you an excellent overclocking board (DFI LANparty Ultra-D) or even an SLI-capable board (Abit AN8-SLI). In the end, it would be financially wiser to choose AMD, because both the cost of purchase AND the cost of ownership will be lower.

so your saying AMD becuase they are cheaper and although INTEL oc's to higher freq. it's not big enough gain to make a HIGH difference if you just go amd?

You don't have to use a i975 chipset to use the Intel pentium D 920-950, only the Extreme Edition. The Pentium D 9xx's work in the i955 chipsets aswell.

Yeah, you can use any of these chipsets with the 9x0 processors:

865G
875P
945P
945G
955X
975X

You can really get a killer price on an Intel Dual-Core setup: $100 mobo (945P), $260 processor, $60 RAM, whatever video card you please. $80 cheaper than AMD which will probably run you $120 for the motherboard, $300 for the processor, and $80 for the RAM. The Intel is pretty much gauranteed a high overclock as well with the 65nm technology.

There is a lot of love for AMD around here and I'm not going to begrudge them that since AMD has won the last two rounds, but until they get 65nm out the door Intel is the king in price/performance. $260 for a chip that hits 4GHz easily...the very thought makes me cream my pants.
 
The 875p is sparking my interest, as I still have an AGP board and some DDR1 memory. But itching for a 920. I wonder how well the DFI 875p overclocks....
 
we;ll i know i'm going dual core.. but intel or amd? i proably don't plan on overclocking and i need the cooler processor becuse i'm geting a sff.... so i guess... what's the pros/cons of intel dual core and amd dual core.. compared to each other ya know.

It's not s478, though I do wish it was :(

DFI released a motherboard that had an LGA775 socket, but used an 875P chipset with an AGP slot. A good solution fo those looking to go dual-core without changing their RAM or GPU, I'm thinking of doing it myself (though I do hate to buy a DFI board).
