DigiTimes, citing anonymous sources, says that Intel's first 45nm processor will be a quad-core Core 2 Extreme and cost $999. Processor speed will be 3.33GHz on a 1333MHz FSB with 12MB L2 cache.

In addition to the quad-core Core 2 Extreme processor, there will be two performance level quad-core processors adopting a 45nm process launched soon after, with both processors adopting a 1333 MHz FSB and 12MB L2 Cache. Another four 45nm dual-core processors (Wolfdale) will be launched in the first half of 2008.

gg, AMD.

It's funny to hear GG amd when we're looking at $999 cpu's that I know I'm not buying anytime soon. I wonder what percentage of the market will actually buy those at that price considering you can get a Q6600 for around $300.

Lets all hope that AMD can pick their asses up off of the floor. Intel running the show with no competition means high prices.

*is flabbergasted at the price tag*
Good night! Well, I know I'll be waiting until those chips are in the $150-$225 range. See ya in four years, guys!

Holy crap, is this the new QX6850 or the QX6900?!?

I'm looking forward to this one :D This baby is so mine.

This is nothing different from Intel's usual strategy. Their high end chips are always MSRP'd at $999

The Pentiun Extreme Editions were all $999 in their heyday's
The X6800 is $999 ($980 at Newegg)
The QX6700 is $999 ($968 at Newegg)
The QX6800 is $999 ($980 at Newegg)

This is their highend CPU being talked about. The lowere end ones will be release later on just like they were last year when Core 2 Extreme launched a couple weeks befrore Core 2 Duos did.

The basic specs sound impressive.

I'll wait until the real-world benchmarks by 3rd parties ( [H] ) are released to see how impressive they really are or aren't.

I don't see performance being all that different from Kentsfield. Everything I've seen thus far has indicated a few tweaks to the architecture, but it's mostly just a die shrink and a clock bump. It'll probably have only a slght performance gain over an overclocked QX6*00. Although I would like to see how this thing scales. Maybe we'll get to see 4.5-5.0GHz overclocks using air?

You do realize that the Q6600 is also Intel right? So saying its not GG you would need to provide something showing that AMD has a good processor as well.

Its GG for now because Intel will control the cheap (Q6600) and high end quad processors, along with the middle as well most likely.

So was the E6800 when it first launched, it was $999 and the only Conroe avail at the ttime IIRC. Now look, we're about to get sub-$100 Core 2's. :)

Don't worry, here in two months Intel will slash prices yet again, and it'll be half that price.

way too expensive for me

i wonder how long it will take for these to drop to $200
