Why is this running so incredibly hot? My case isn't over 40*C (which is still a bit hot, I know), but I really wonder why the processor is running so ridiculously hot ... I applied Arctic Silver and I'm using the stock HSF. Any answers?
 
Im no expert on pentium d's but think about it for a second.... two precott cores in one processor.... HOT!!

I think thats just a bit hotter than normal so i wouldnt worry about it. But if your that worried you could go down the h20 road or just get a Thermalright SI-120 should get your temps down substantially compared to stock.

Oh and did you apply the AS5 like it says on their site or did you use the credit card method?
 
Another user commented on this. His temps were running high. Using a Thermaltake BTX unit without any extra thermal paste I have seen 50c idle on that processor.

You may want to reapply the arctic silver, but this time do not use a lot, use only a small drop, and do not spread it by hand, allow the pressure of the HS/F to spread it. Also, make sure to clean off all prior thermal paste and pad thoroughly.
 
I went ahead and did this. Removed the HSF, removed all of the paste that was on there with some lint-free cloth, and then re-applied the smallest drop I could imagine on the processor and let it spread on it's own.

Now the PC shuts down just after POSTing and the motherboard is beeping. :( I was somewhat worried when wiping off thermal paste off the processor since I may have pushed a bit too hard. Could this have caused my problem? Or what?

I'm lost. :(
 
Sounds like you just used to little and there isn't enough contact now, apply more paste.

As for the 60 degrees - who cares? The processor is meant to run at that temp, it is happy doing it, so let it do it as long as it is stable.
 
Remove the heatsink and clean off the base and the cpu with isopropanol or nail polish remover .. wipe it off clean with a lint free cloth .. make sure it's clean .. i.e. nothing is left on the cloth after you're done wiping.

apply the thermal paste .. as small as a grain of rice .. put the heatsink back on in one move .. do not twist or pull off then re seat ..

switch on the pc .. go to the bios and check the cpu temp. hopefully it's lower
 
physically press down on the heatsink after you've seated it on the CPU too (hard but not superman hard).....if you just put it on there without applying pressure it will not make good contact with the CPU, trust me.

I applied AS5 and put on the hsf and had 75 degree temps. I pressed down on the HSF and my temps went down to 65 (though speedfan tells me 55)

I apologize if you already posted this info, but what are the specs of the rest of your system, including case & fans? I think, like already mentioned, it may be a combo of factors such as improper mounting, & case ventilation.

I'm running a PD 830 OC'ed to 3.4GHz & the cores idle at about 38*C, but get up to about 68*C under load (gaming, encoding, etc). I installed the proc with AS5 & the stock HSF, but I have to admit it was a little tricky to mount. The directions appeared prety straight forward, but for whatever reason, I was unsure if it was mounted correctly & had to examine it a few times before I was convinced. I'm definitely considering investing in an aftermarket cooler, though. I thinking the Zalman 9500 should work ok. I think the biggest prob I have with this proc is the fact that it warms up my PC room a great deal. Maybe Watercooling wouldn't be a bad idea, but the fact remains......no matter how cool your CPU gets, that heat still has to go somewhere.....which still results in a hot room :)

I hope Presler will be compatible with my mobo.....
 
small pea size glob right in the middle, put the HSF down straight on the CPU, twist slightly to spread, then push down & hold down while locking in the hold downs.
