Im trying to put together an Intel system for a $1000 or less. I want the best performance I can get in this price range obviously. I would like to play games like FEAR and Counterstrike Source. I also do quite a bit of encoding dvds and cds. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Oh and i have already have a gig of OCZ PC3200 ram.

Go with AMD or you will have to get DDR2, unless you want to go with dated 478 processor/mobo and AGP. It will most likely be a little cheaper to get amd anyway.

 what?

Why is DDR2 a bad thing? it's the same price, if not a little cheaper, than DDR. And since when is AMD cheaper now? last I checked pentium D's are cheaper than X2's. Seriously man, you sound like nothing but a !!!!!!.

anyway, to give USEFUL advice, I'd go with a 945P based mobo and a cheap pentium D. Slap in 2 x 512 of some normal DDR2 and a midrange video card, and you'll be good to go.

Wow dude. calm down. I said that because, as he said in his post, he already had PC3200. (reading is fundamental ;) )

I didn't realize that people are not allowed to have their own opinions on this forum.

Both have comparable prices, but buying new ram will end up costing you a bit more.

Sell your DDR and get yourself a good 945 chipset mobo, some DDR2, and Pentium D 920/930 and OC it to 4+ GHz.... Spend rest on decent storage (SATA Raid...) for your DVD rips and pr0n... :D

i am personally thinking about buildng a pent d 805 system....it's a dual core 2.66ghz and should be decent for what u want....only cost 138 for the chip on newegg....fry's had a deal w/ an ecs motherboard for like 159 this past week....u can most likely oc it up and over 3.0ghz on air....it's a socket t(775) so if u want more power later, u can get a 9xx pent d or watever comes out.....

dont some 915 boards run on DDR 1?? like the intel 915GHM i have in front of me.

do you need a monitor, OS, keyboard, mouse?

prices all from Newegg.com

Thermaltake SOPRANO Case w/ 430W-------- $96.00
LITE-ON 16X DVD±R Black ---------------------- $36.99
ASUS P5PL2 945P Motherboard ---------------- $92.99
WD Caviar SE 80GB 7200 RPM SATA150 ---- $53.00
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2-533 ------------ $152.00
Windows XP Home With SP2 -------------------- $89.95
Pentium D 805 Smithfield Dual Core ----------- $138.00
BFG 7900GT OC -----------------------------------$329.00 <I'd go cheaper but its the only 7900GT in stock at newegg>

Total $988.00 + shipping to your zip (probably about $40)

Sell your DDR1 as you'll need DDR2 for the future.

Now, if you don't need WinXP, upgrade your motherboard to an ASUS P5WD2 for $153. (only $60 more, and make your total like $958 before shipping)

I don't know why everyone is recommending dual core chips. Yes they're great (I have one myself) but if gaming is more important to him, he can certainly get more performance for his money out of a cheaper single-core processor and a faster video card.

Sorry, had a really bad day yesterday...didn't mean to come off so harsh.

Anyway, the reason I recommeded a dual-core is because that's the direction the industry is headed...games, drivers, and other applications are becoming multi-threaded so if he's going to build a new box now then a dual-core might be a good idea.

But a single core would work nice as well, especially considering the single P4's have HT which adds a little bit of SMP smoothness. I currently run a P4 560J at 4.03ghz and it's wonderful.

Why go single core when he can go dual core for just as cheap.

Pentium 560 === $300 <-- bad choice

Pentium D 805 = $138 <-- cheapest / best bang for buck
Pentium 4 631 = $200 <-- ok choice if mobo supports Cedar Mill
Pentium D 920 = $260 <-- great choice

If he's just gaming, then the 631 overclocked to 4.5Ghz + might be a good option. But for cheaper the 805 will probably hit 3.8Ghz and be DUAL CORE. Or if the money is available the 920 will probably hit 4Ghz+ @ dual core.

I agree - if anyone can find a good deal on a dual-core it'd be worth it even if they didn't match a single core's overclocked speeds. If we see more smp patches for games, he could find that the performance gain would be pretty much in his favour - and you'd also benefit from the many other things a dual-core can provide.

Kind of a weak video card don't you think?

You don't sacrifice much speed (raw Mhz) with going dual core, at least not for Preslers as they've been hitting 4Ghz pretty easily. (better than most Prescotts) You might get 10% faster clock on a single core Cedar Mill like 4.4Ghz+ but thats not that much considering in some apps the dual core could almost be 100% faster (videoencoding, etc). And with Nvidia's drivers supporting dual core it they often give you a 10% boost for dual core, so that offsets the slightly faster single core speed, assuming you can hit 4.4+Ghz.

I don't think he should buy a 7800GTX or something becuase DX10 is just around the corner... why do you want to spend a lot of money on tech that's just around the bend (it's not like 2 years, DX10 is coming earlier). 6800GS runs everything fine... hell, my friend's 9800pro ran everything fine. The power supply is to allow for better overclocking. That coolermaster is used by Xbit labs. 6800GS can overclock to higher speeds..... the pressler will be good, the 955X motherboard has OC tools and things to overclock (extreme edition board from intel), 1GB ultra DDR2 533 with timings of 3-3-3-8.... i think that sounds decent
