Intel P4 3.0 S478

My 3.0 S478 is running 54 degrees Celsius at idle...I'm going to try to reseat it, but I followed Artic Silver's directions and put a dot in the center and pushed the heatsink down. Should I completely cover the processor and make it a little thicker?
 
I'm going to take a guess here: Prescott right? Welcome to your temp, unless you want to watercool, I think that's about as good as it's going to get.

 
Are you using the Intel Stock HSF, also what motherboard? did you make sure to clean up the thermal pad completely and wipe with some alcohol?

What is your ambient temperature? That sounds a bit high, maybe not seated right.

You don't need much AS, do as the directions say, but you should be in the mid 40's* at idle or lower.

Running at 3.0 on my setup i'll be able to run 39~41c at idle! running at 3.42GHz i run around 45c idle!
 
Welcome to the club! I idle at 48C and load at 62C, with a slight OC and a $50 heatsink... have fun with it!
 
lol ya its a Prescott but its too high even for a Prescott...my load temps would be like 70+ I'm using the Stock Intel HSF and not overclocking right now. Its hard not to seat the stock heatsink right...it only goes on one way...and theres no room for anything else, im going to try and reseat it again, ill check if something weird occurred with the AS5. Whats the highest temp I can go with this processor?
 
I think it varies a bit chip by chip. I've got 51C at Idle with an IC7-Max3 and an XP90 w/the High Speed Panaflow fan. Some of these just run a lot hotter.

 
Ya your right, I'm not even going to worry about it mine would be considered average...some people are running 60-70 degrees celsius idle...meh I'll try it out...no O/C until I get an aftermarket HSF tho... thanks.
 
Damn, that must be a 478 thing, all of my 775 E0's have idle'd at 39-41c and clocked to 4ghz on stock voltage. I did have a D0 478 prescott and that bastard ran as hot as yours.
 
Ya D0 isnt the best revision E0 wouldve been better, but it was a good deal, and well we shall see. I just dont know how high I can push the temperatures? Whats the highest it should go under load? Anyone know the max? Isnt it like 76.5? or something? I can't find it. I had it saved on this HD but I had to reformat this particular drive during the systems setup.
 
lol ok so I run two SP2004s at the same time to try and heat it up...and guess what...the temps stayed the same and even dropped down a little lol. Fried sensor?
 
Okay found out whats up. Speedfan was reporting the wrong temperatures. CPU is idling at 36-40 degrees Celsius according to the mobo. So I guess Speedfan was giving me the Northbridge temperature. After discovering this I've come to realize this thing is going to be A TON of fun to overclock. My P4 2.0 is idling at 32-36 so its not much hotter.

Abit seems to have an issue with reporting temps higher than they really are. I have not put a thrermal probe on mine, but MBM reports I idle at 43C and load in the low-mid 50's. This is a Northwood too, not the notoriously hot Prescott. I have read in many many places that Abit over reports by as high as 10 degrees in some instances.

It seems chips vary in their temps. Mine stays at 40C idle, 50C load.

My Intel board does this as well. Speed fan reports the temps as 8 degrees cooler.

I'm running it at 3.5 right now and its idling at 40C and 60-65C under dual Prime 95 load during Quake 4 or Doom 3 its only around 45-50C tops... Mine just heats up more.
 
Mine idles at 47C and load is 55-60 under water.....And its an E0 Pressy overclocked to 4.0ghz ....Ive also read that my IC7 is reading temps 10degrees higher which i dont like...i hate seeing my idle at 47 when it truly is 37 :(
 
Mine used to run at 50-55 idle... Took the Zalman cooler to get it down to 40-41-ish.

I use motherboard monitor, and I think there is a correction factor that is available if you want to change your reading by x degrees. I have not changed it on mine, beacuse I would like to maybe put a thermal probe in there to see what it is really doing. I have never had any stability problems loading in the mid-high 50's.

Supposedly Abit corrected the temperature accuracy problem many BIOS reisions ago, but to this day there are a ton of posts in the Abit forums about temperature reading problems. Some reported that the new BIOS made no difference at all. There is an article floating around on the web showing how Asus board read low, and Abit boards read high.

If it is stable and it idles and loads to the same consistent temperatures, I would forget about it. I use MBM as a reference only, not necessarily for accuracy.
 
Same here, my ABIT 1C7-Max3 always reads my 3.0E@3.75 (default voltage) idle at ~49C and Load ~55C (this is with watercooling) but since I know the temps are mis-read by ~10C, I dont worry too much.

I would hate to be on air with a prescott though.

I'm on air with a Prescott, the stock cooler actually, and am having no problems. Some people have been having some serious overheating problems with some chips, but mine runs at 40C idle, 52C full load.

It is researched that the Asus boards seem to register low, and the Abit boards read high. I will find the article. Fact is, you can't trust software temperature monitoring. I doubt that the tolerances vary so much in a production CPU that temperatures vary by 10-15 degrees with the same processor in a different board. I don't doubt however that variations in software monitoring exist with respect to different board manufacturers.

Edit: I was wrong about CPU's all being the same. According to this article, every CPU will have a slight variation. The article does show a large difference in Abit vs. Asus however. There are more articles on the web, I know I have read many others...

I think they can handle a little higher temperature than 76.5C because I woke up one morning and looked over at my computer to see that the processor temperature was 90C :eek:. Come to find out my CNPS7700 wasn't plugged in very well and had gone off. Didn't hurt anything though thankfully.
 
I am running a 3.2e 1MB L2-Cache on a Asus P4P800 E Deluxe motherboard with a Zalmens heat sink and my temps are pretty good they are CPU--34c and my motherboard is 27c

Yeah, I had a monsterous dual-celeron setup once where the processors didn't start doing things until about 120C :eek: Then my computer would reboot itself. This only happened during the summer months though.
