Just a quick question for the intel forum...

I'm putting a pc together out of old parts I've got laying around. it's going to be used for web surfing, checking email, burning cd's and watching dvd's. I've completed the build but I need to decide which cpu to install. The choices are an Intel P3 600 or an Intel Celeron 667. Please let me which one would offer better performance. Thanks.

The P3 600MHz is faster, due to more cache and a faster FSB.

Either one would be fine for web browsing and basic tasks. DVD playback acceleration is a function included in most video cards since the late 90s.

as above, the p3 will be much faster, however I had a 667 celeron that would overclock to a GIG with stock intel cooling

The P3 won't be MUCH faster, but it is faster. Especially for gaming and other cache-intensive apps. Grab the P3 if you have a choice.

Okay, Heres two more comparisons...

Which performs better: Celeron 667 oc'd to 1000mhz or a Pentium 3 800mhz running stock.

The reason I ask is because I've got a Celeron that I know for a fact will run stable at 1ghz. I have never overclocked the P3 800 and I dont know what to expect from that. If the Celeron @ 1ghz is the better choice then i'd rather go with that vs trying to oc the P3 800.

P3. Even if it's the worst OC-ing p3 ever it should still get 1.0ghz with ease. Plus the celerons are crippled so much by their small cache and lower bus speed that the 800 P3 could probably beat the celery even at 1ghz.

I have a box running dual P3 800E's on a tyan tiger 100 and they'll run 1.066ghz (highest the board can go) with no problems.

What settings are you using to reach that speed? Any special cooling required or will the stock intel with artic silver do the job?

the celeron at 1ghz will be faster than a p3 at 800mhz.

guys, these arent northwood (or willamette) cores. the coppermine celerons were NOT hurt that much by the 128kb cache.

Take the celery. The coppermine P3's were hardly phased at all by the 128k cache. The P3's only had 256k. A celery at 1.0 ghz will trounce a P3 800 in almost any bench. 200mhz Clock speed, 200mhz speed advantage L2 cache. Depending on how he got the OC..bus speed advantage. Come on. The celery stomps on that p3.

right the 1ghz celeron would win...but in that case you're comparing the p3 and STOCK speeds to a celery at MAX OC. That 800mhz P3 will be able to hit at least 1ghz, I guarantee it assuming it's on a decent motherboard. In which case the P3 is better. You don't compare one cpu at max oc to another at stock...

except that is exactly what he is doing, he said he didnt want to screw with OCing the p3 when he had an assured OC on the celeron.

in that case, the celeron will stomp it.

Hmm... see I thought that is what we were comparing...I wonder why? ;)

Well, I've got 2 mobos, one with a locked bios and one with adjustable fsb and voltage. I'll eventually end up throwing together another box and I wanted to save the fastest stock cpu for the mobo that cant be overclocked. But until I do that, I wanted to know what was faster - oc'ed 677 or stock 800. I suppose if I end up not building the second box I could put the 800 in the first one and overclock it.
