Intel or Amd? Quick Answer, Plse

quick build for a friend. vista, 2gb ram, middle vid card. some games (like tf2), word, internet. no oc. for around $160, intel 6550, or amd 6400 ? thanx.

i prob should ask this on amd forum also. i use i ntel and amd, so there is no brand loyalty stuff.
 
My AMD works great, but it did take a little more tweaking to get it "right". Intel just works. With the prices being close these days, and speed being in Intel's favor, I would choose Intel easily - especially if being built for somebody else.

Intel currently has the best performing processors with the most overclocking head room. They are also reasonably priced. With AMD you can get a slightly higher end motherboard for less money, but otherwise the pricing isn't that far off. Phenom is terrible at overclocking and the architecture of the Athlon X2 is dated at this point. No clock speed you'll be able to hit with either of those processors will match Intel's lower end Core 2 Duo's or Quad's overclocked. Back on the motherboard comparison, you have the option of using motherboards with Intel chipsets on them. That right there makes the decision easier for me on a personal level.
 
did you really need to ask? Come on Vanilla, you've been around long enough to know the situation right now Intel > AMD in every way.

I'd probably get an e4xx0 and spend the money on a nice heat sink & overclock it to the max. Unless you had already budgeted a nice heatsink.

If they can wait a little while, the e8400 SHOULD become available again soon, and hopefully sell closer to their MSRP. ie: $189'ish
 
AMD all the way. I used to have intel but I was sick and tired of yelling at my computer to hurry up. Switched to AMD, goodbye problem.
 
Intel....I bought the $90 MSI mATX G33 chipset board, $80 E2180 CPU, $20 Artic cooling freezer pro HSF and $5 AS5. Had it up and running stable at 3.0Ghz in about 15 minutes....can't beat the price/performance ratio. (Also I'm using some $40 2x1GB DDR2 PC6400 RAM)

exactly, even budget Intel is blowing away AMD. Burton is smoking AMD flavored crack.
 
Intel, and I'm not a fan boy, E21xx CPUs over clock like crazy and are super cheap.
 
same as above i was an AMD fan but now im all the way with INTEL they have the best CPU's out there and the prices are reasonable.....so i would say INTEL
 
Intel. Ran AMD for 5 years and ATI for 10. Left both, not going back unless something really impressive comes from either of them. This is the most stable build I have ever had, by far.

In case you haven't noticed, Intel is kicking AMD's ass in every possible way right now.
 
for me it depends on price. I still feel if not OC'ing, on the low end you can get a better deal on AMD. If OC or more $$ are options, then Intel all of the way.

I have to agree with everyone else. Go with an E8400 @ $189.00 in stock at Microcenter.
 
Even if your not going to overclock, It's nice to know that you have about an 800 MHZ buffer between what you are running at and it's max speed. Summers get hot, heat sinks collect dust and power isn't cheap which I would definitely give the edge to Intel right now with the new 45nm chips.
 
ok thanx, i didnt have a clear picture of how badly the top end amd cpus (6400 be specifically) compared against mid/low end intel (6550, 4500, etc) because i havent been keeping up with amd stuff for a year or so. my htpc has one, and my terciary (son's) machine also, but they are older and all they have to do is run without problems.

so looks like either a 6550 or 4600, and a dfi lp dk p35.

If you're OC'ing, don't bother with the E6550. Go for either the E4500 or E6750 -- the multiplier on the E6550 is too low, IMO, to get a good OC out of it.
 
The multi is a big downside to the e6550. But it's ok. It has a bigger cache than the e4XX I think. but the e67 is a lil pricey. lol decisions decisions
