I am considering getting the below combo...any thoughts to a first time Intel'er?

Gigabyte 8KNXP Rev. 2.x

I've always been an AMD kinda d00d, but I think I found a deal. I can get the above board and a 2.8 Northwood for $60. (Local). (Friend).

Now, is this motherboard failure prone? Worth the $60? Discuss, please.

Oh, and nobody tell me to wait for Conroe, or to get a 775 board :p.
 
well it IS a gigabyte which means minus a few points right off the bat

but it sure as heck looks like a great mobo...the feature set on it is ridiculous. 875P, 6 dimms, agp-pro, 4 SATA ports, the crazy mosfet card thing, extra 2-channel IDE raid, etc.

overall it looks like a killer 478 board

I, as well as lots of other people here, tend not to be very fond of gigabyte's mobos. But it's personal preference and it really just boils down to what people like...so take it at face value. One thing I don't like is that they tend to be all flair but no oomph...for example, their boards always have lots of bling and lots of features but often are very poor overclockers. like in the case of that mobo the feature set is awesome but...well...there's a reason the IC7 and P4C800's were more popular boards. But like I said, it looks like a killer board...the feature set looks kickass. Overall it looks very nice...I'm just afriad it may not OC well.

At stock speeds the 2.8 northy should outrun any athlon XP and should perform on par with the low-binned A64's. Overclock it to a comfortable ~3.4ghz and you have quite a nice little chip there.

for both? hell yeah.

cpu alone is worth far more than that, let alone an 875P mobo.

if you don't take it tell your friend to contact me instead :D
 
I would do it. Giga-Bytes are good stable boards just dont expect alot of overclocking head room. 2.8 northies are good chips also. Like said should beat any XP or a low end A64.

I run Giga-Byte boards I like them but then Im not much of one for extreme overclocks.
 
I'd take it if I weren't already running a 2.4C with an IC7-G. Not a bad combo, the i875 chipset is godly, and the C Northwoods were the best of them.
 
Sorry for interrupting.. but 2.8 Northwood = 2.8C, right? 512K L2, 0.13m process?I mean.. there's no other 2.8Ghz Intel proccy out there, is there? Prescott and this one.. also a 2.8A, IIRC.. 533FSB and no HT.. was that a Northwood as well?

Might be getting one of the Northwoods myself, along with an Asus P4C800. Dad needs a nice CAD/CAM machine for cheap, I have a Radeon 9800Pro lying around.. it ought to be enough.Just wanna be sure about the processor.

I assume the OP was getting a Northwood C 2.8, but yes, there is a Northwood B with 533 Mhz FSB and operating at 2.8 Ghz. Not as good as a performer as the Northwood C for obvious reasons.

I'll have to check back on that. All I know is that it;s a northwood, slightly under 3.0.


So I think I'm getting a nice deal guys, sweet.

Hopefully this will be better than my 1.4 AthlonXP.......:p
 
Gigabyte makes fine boards, I've had several in the past without a hitch.
 
My Gigabyte mobo hasn't let me down yet. It's folding away with it's little 1.6@2.08Ghz P4. Go for it.
