Hello, i am looking to make some upgrades to my storage server, and was looking at the intell S3210SHLX which i know is an older board but it will let me re-use my older pci-x cards for now.

The question i have is in regards to the 6 onboard sata ports, does anyone know if they can be used as regular sata ports no raid etc? I have a stack of WD 2Tb green drives on which i can not enable TLER, and if they would work on the onboard sata ports that would help me reduce my stack of unused hardware.

So if anyone has any information on running NON tler enabled drives on the motherboard please let me know if it works fine or if you have drop outs.

Thanks!

Chipset SATA ports functioning in AHCI or IDE (ATA) mode will be great for software RAID since you will not need TLER-feature on your harddrives; assuming your RAID engine does not need it such as on Linux/BSD/ZFS.

So you would want a HBA controller and not a RAID controller. A RAID controller is capable of disconnecting your disks outside of the control of the operating system. So if you use software RAID under Linux/BSD you would want a HBA and not a RAID controller.

I am looking at just running WHS on it, so basically just functioning like JBOD, however my 3ware controller even in JBOD dropped the disks, thats why im wondering what the on board intel would do...

AHCI or IDE should not have that behavior. Unless the OS (windows) drops the disk itself, but generally windows just falls back to PIO mode and retries indefinitely.

So any chipset provided SATA able to function in non-RAID (AHCI or IDE) mode will be suitable to you, including Intel onboard SATA.

Your 3Ware controller may have set each individual disk as a separate RAID array (1 disc per array to simulate JBOD) and hence the reason for dropping the disc. Most RAID controllers emulate a JBOD setup this way.

Yeah the 3ware did make me create individual raid disks...

Hence why i couldnt use the green drives on the cards..

Well if i can use all 6 ports on the Intel board without having to create an array being simply pass thru then that should work as i can then use 6 of those drives i have still sitting here...
