intel mb + cedarmill severe overheating

I just got all the parts to put together a little system and I'm having extreme overheating issues. The board is the intel D945GNT and the processor is p4 (cedarmill) 3.2. I'm using the big heat sink that came with it.

the board is running 75 C. I flashed the bios and that didn't help. I noticed the Fan speed sits around 1400 and doesn't go up from there. That seems REALLY low. I've checked every place I can find to try and force the fan speed up but there doesn't seem to be any settings I can use.

anyway have any ideas why this is running so hot?

also, the heat sink is getting pretty hot as well so i'm pretty sure the thermal transfer area is solidly set.
 
try reseating the fan even tho you say its gettin hot , doesnt always mean its getting full contact.

make sure you take your mobo out while mounting the HSF they can be a real bitch at times , an Push pretty hard an MAKE sure you hear EACH AND EVERYONE of them LOCK in place
 
yea, I did that. So far this has been an unmitigated nightmare. I even went so far as to go buy a third party heat sink. That got the temperature down to a nice cool 55 C. (boggle). I have reseated the heat sink 3 times now and each time I waited to hear the click and made sure it was locked down hard. I've built many computers before successfully and I'm being very careful to do things very carefully and correctly.

at this point I think I either have a bad intel p4 cedarmill chip or that intel has really become a total piece of garbage. I'm going to see if newegg will take this piece of junk back and exchange it for an amd mboard proc and ram. I know it's going to be a tough sell with newegg but I'm going to try (I'll keep you posted).

maybe its just a off heatspreader , ive had that happen once before with my last 3.0 p4 i had to sand it down to the copper for good contact

you could always do that if newegg don't take it back :) or just sell it off an get a Pentium D 805 an overclock to 4.0 easy , its a 130$ dual core chip an i love it
 
what is an 'off heat spreader' and what do you do about that? clearly this thing isn't cooling even with a $100 aftermarket cooler.
 
what i meant by a off heatspreader , you know the silver part of the p4 ... it may not be level an getting direct contact with the hsf? if you cant return it you can always try sanding it down till all copper is showing to get maxium contact but this WILL Void your warr.
 
Something is not right. I just helped a friend put together a nice system with a dual core 920 processor. But it is a presler not cedarmill. He used a ZALMAN CNPS9500 to keep it cool and it works great. Its overclocked from 2.8 to 3.8. It idles at 38c and full load at 55c.

I'm guessing yours is not overclocked. At stock speeds 55c while idling is to high a temp, especially with a aftermarket cooler. My guess would be a bad heat spreader as some others had suggested. You should not have to sand down the heat spreader on a brand new cpu to keep it cool if it's at stock speeds. Try to rma it for another one and see if that fixes your problem.

Thats more inline what it should be.

Mine is a few degrees higher, but its at 3.9Ghz.

At 4Ghz it ran even hotter, plus took more voltage, so I've left mine at 3.9Ghz.

Pretty much every 9x0 I've seen hits 3.8Ghz+.
The 920 has the same multiplier as the 965 Extreme Edition, so when you overclock it to 266FSB, (1066) its at the same speed, for 1/4 of the price!
