Intel Killing Off the Traditional CPU+Socket Model?

Remember it is SA , so take it with a grain of salt as well, they dont exactly have a 100% track record ;)

Interesting read none-the-less

Makes sense to me, sockets are getting huge while silicon is shrinking and CPUs very rarely fail so why do they need to be removable? It's the same with GPUs and most laptops and portable devices. Mainstream desktop CPUs aren't much bigger than even ARM mobile chips anyways now that Intel just keeps shrinking 4 cores and a weak GPU. I don't see how it really kills whatever "enthusiast" use that article is talking about.

theres already a discussion in the intel sub forum about it. but from the looks of everything its limited to the mid range/oem market. which makes complete sense business wise for the OEM's intel and the motherboard manufactures. sucks for the consumers though but the people that are buying those types of systems wouldn't know much about it anyways. more then likely they will continue the standard socket with the high end market allowing motherboard manufactures to consolidate the amount of different boards they make. especially when you look at companies like gigabyte who have 30 different boards just for lga-1155 and lga-2011.

Maybe Via will actually take processors serious.

Might end up being that only Xeons are removable.

That would end up being quite interesting.

I also hope AMD is able to stick around, so if this happens, we have a choice.

AMD should just switch to APU video cards and do away with the sockets. Just add more PCI express slots so you can virtually make regular desktops multi-APU beasts. Kinda like back in the Slot 1 days.
