While I was researching on a new build for a buddy, I noticed that many of the system builders include a CPU water cooler. They are usually the single loop type cooler for the CPU only (ie Corsair H60, Asetek). Some companies include it as standard on i7 (not i5).

Is this due to the heat of the i7, air cooling does not cut it or just a way for the company to say "water cooled"? Just curious that's all.
 
Decent aftermarket air coolers do just fine on i7's. I believe it is more the latter.
 
Definitely more of a marketing gimmick than anything. Rarely do these companies actually do a proper custom loop. It's also an easy way for the company to guarantee cooling performance on the CPU while skimping on other things like case fans...while charging the customer more for it.

Just replaced my H100 with a proper custom water loop...not even close. H100 was basically air cooling level IMO. With a proper water loop I am able to easily get .2ghz faster, .125v more vcore and 10c cooler.

Some all-in-one units like the swiftech h320 get closer to a full loop performance wise, but they are more expensive and rarely used in OEM builds.
 
AIOs basically have equivalent cooling to their tower cooler (120mm) counterparts. Low end AIOs match low end tower coolers, high end matches high end, and none can match real watercooling. It's just sometimes more convenient to install an AIO over a tower cooler, particularly larger ones.
