Ok my friend got a Asus Rampage II Extreme motherboard and an i7 980x with 6GB (3x 2GB) Corsair D. GT from Newegg. And when he entered windows 7 bringing up the CPUz and Windows 7 System properties it shows 2 different GHZ. On CPUz it shows 4.5Ghz and on Windows 7 System Properties it shows 3.8 Ghz and plus the task manager it shows only 4 cores. Was it suppose to show 6 Cores? Why it only shows 4? my friend try go into the Asus Rampage II Bios setting and it is very hard and he do not know which setting to change in order for Cpuz and Windows 7 System properties to shows the same Ghz and for Task manager to show 6 cores. Anyone know the solution for this?

Well I hope he knows what hes doing, maybe he should lay off the OC until he updates the bios to one that supports gulftown. Check windows update and Cpu-Z for latest versions as well.

He have the lastest CPUz, he even flashed his bios to the lastest and updated windows from windows update. it still shows 4. I was reading about the 980x on guru3d.com it say that:

Inevitably, chips based on the Nehalem family will have between two and eight cores, the high-end range will be capable of handling two independent software threads per physical CPU core. This is called Hyper Threading, Intel's name for the concept. It allows a processor to execute two different code streams at pretty much the same time.

This was a feature found in Intel's single-core Pentium 4 processors but later discontinued with the advent of multicore chips, but it's essentially the same technology as before. With two threads per core, Core i7 Gulftown chips will pack no less than twelve logical cores at launch. If you look at the screenshot to the right you can see that happening.

"NO LESS THAN TWELVE LOGICAL CORES AT LAUNCH"

The ScreenShot shows 12 CORES ALL TOGETHER. Newegg said it is 6 cores. I am really confused -_- but it still shows 4 cores. Plus the Corsair memory he have is 2000 mhz but it shows 1333mhz in bios.

He put his bios as default setting and leave it as it is and now it is showing 2 cores and 4 threads -_-.

Ah we found the solution now... -_- in order for it to show 12 cores and same speed in CPUZ and Windows system properties... U must REFORMAT ur windows 7. It installed really fast. So thanks yall for the help.

That certainly wasn't necessary for me.

Reformat wasn't necessary. You probably had something in bootup/msconfig to limit the # of cores.
