Trying to find normal operating temperature for Intel's i7 6700HQ.

Mine on my laptop seems to run hotter then id personally would think...

Hovers around 45-50'c. anyone have any idea where I can find out of its considered cool or not? Only reason I ask, is it runs hotter than an overclocked i5 750 I owned, considering its 14nm and only 2.6GHz, seems relatively hot to me but could just be me...

why would you consider anything between 45-50C hot?... it's fine for a laptop specially if its designed to be quite as it will prefer to have a lower fan speed at good temps, that's a chip that have a TJmax of 100C so you are very well below of thermal throttling. in my opinion 45-50C sounds great for a eight thread i7 mobile CPU because as we all know laptop cooling isn't anything good... remember is not just a 2.6ghz chip as it can go up to 3.5ghz and that temperature i hardly doubt it will start to throttle for any reason more than TDP.. in my opinion everything is great for a mobile i7 CPU.

45-50C is normal. Even my i3 6100U NUC is 45-50C idle with its "laptop type" cooling. As long as its under 100C at load its essentially fine.

Sounds pretty normal to me as well. If its fully down clocking and or using what ever that gen uses for c-states is about all you could do. You could set cpu cooling/ processor power management/ to "passive" and see what happens. My guess it wont help to much

Intel designs these chips to run at up to ~100C. The laptop dynamic fan speed policy probably has the fan running in a slow mode because it is no where near the thermal limit. It saves power and noise to spin the fan slower.

it runs hotter than an overclocked i5 750 I owned

I bet you had a much larger heatsink / fan on the i5.

I have a Dell XPS17 L702 with i7 2720QM and it runs in the mid 50 C range when idle, or very light use.

I run in that range during normal light use. Dell Insprion 7559

Seems about right for a laptop.

reason I ask, I had a i7 4500U that never ran cooler then 60'C So when I seen that the i7 6700 is running about the same as my overclocked 4790k, was curious if its fine. ALL my past Intel Laptop CPU's ran 45/60'C under normal operating conditions. I consider Normal... 20-30'C so 40+ seemed high.

25-30C requires a large cooler while the CPU runs at 800Mhz idle. 20C requires water if its even possible.

Most cooling designs today, specially on mobile is designed for lowest noise.

60C load tends to be for 15W chips, not 45W chips. Remember, 4500U=15W, 6700HQ=45W.
