Not sure if this is the right forum section for this.
I only have a cheap acer laptop with an hd4000 intel graphics right now, it's fine in terms of performance but the display quality is beyond horrible. So I was going to buy a dell s2415h to use with it since the acer got an hdmi port, but now I'm not sure if I should bother with a quality monitor at all.
The problem is, according to google, intel and nvidia graphics drivers recognize all monitors connected via hdmi as hdtv's and send 16-235 signal instead of expected full rgb 0-255 resulting in completely washed out image, gray blacks and low contrast. Maybe there are hdmi monitors that don't suffer from this issue, but I know exactly the new dell monitors have this hdmi problem as it's been reporter numerous times.
However there's a registry fix for nvidia that forces 0-255 output, but I can't seem to find any workarounds for the Intel hd driver.
There's an option in the control panel under video that allows you to change full or limited but it's said to be not working at all.
So, is there a solution to this or should I just hope that intel will fix their drivers in the near future?:confused:
 
According to Intel, Full Range RGB should work with HD Graphics 4000. It's only HD 2000/3000 that are stuck with limited range. If it can't be activated through the control panel, you should be able to make it work by changing some registry settings. The details of how to do this can be found in comments on the issue at the AVS Forum site. The surest fix is probably an AMD card, as some people have reported that the latest Nvidia drivers force limited range RGB.

Of course you could simply use a VGA cable, which is what I use with my S2440L. I noticed no real improvement in sharpness through HDMI with this monitor, so Dell must be using a fairly good analog-to-digital converter for displays with a VGA connection.

You need to add DWORD 'EnableRGBFullRange' = "1" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{48E96537-42C5-4ED6-8F7A-6532C553AA26}\0000

Can anyone here confirm it's working with the latest drivers?
 
I can confirm that I currently have full rgb enabled on the dell s2415h going from a lenovo x220 laptop with hd3000 - diplayport to hdmi cable. To get full rgb I had to just set a custom resolution in the intel control panel using the basic tab and selecting CVT-RB.

I've tried creating a custom resolution through this control panel which for some reason could only be found in system32 folder. But it gave me an error saying that the resolution exceeds maximum bandwidth. Also tried with lower refresh rate and resolution with no result.

Does it have something to do with the display I've tried to set custom res for being an internal laptop screen?

Also, how do you like your s2415h?
