Hey [H],

In a non-gaming setting, would Intel's HD3000 (i3-2105 or i5-2500) be enough to drive two 1920x1080 monitors (HP ZR22w)? If the HD 3000 isn't enough and I do need to pick up a video card, could you suggest some cool and quiet models (preferably Nvidia, though I'd take an AMD if makes more sense)?

Thank!

Just for 2d work?
Yup, basically Excel, Word and Firefox. My real concern was that an app which uses GPU acceleration (Media Player Classic or Flash) would cause performance issues if the HD 3000 was already taxed with running 2 monitors.

Thanks for the advice, GNR!

Thanks Sam!

Does anyone know how the HD 3000 determines the amount of memory to reserve as VRAM? Can it be set manually? I might run one or two VMs if I get an i5-2500 but VMWare usually asks for how much VRAM is to be allocated.

/edit: It appears that the i5-2500 only has the HD 2000 but keeps the VT features. It's the i5-2500k which has the HD 3000 but loses VT-d among other things.

I think it can be adjusted in the control panel. Unless you're short on system RAM though there's usually no real reason to change it.

HD 3000 is suprisingly capable. You'll have no problems with what you are describing.

Pretty sure my Gigabyte Z68 board lets you set the video buffer in BIOS.
