Really Cheap... you can't beat really cheap.. (well you can, Free is awesome)

Seriously dude, if you can get an awesome deal on awesome hardware, what's to debate? (Well unless the said Pentium D box is covered in blood or something...) o_O

No, don't bother. Everyone knows that games are completely unplayable on any kind of Intel machine. Maybe if you put a 7800GTX/X1800XT you could make Quake 1 playable, but I sort of doubt it.

 ;)

its either going to be pretty much half of what ever the full total is or free if they have extra
also its a INTEL board :-( are those good for overclocking and stuff ? i doubt it :-(
im on a amd thunderbird 900 mhz 215 mb and a geforce 2 mx and windows ME i need a new pc bad !

i was thinking of adding a 7800 gt to it but i dont think the processor can handle it maybe i will go with a 6800nu and save some money ? what do you guys think

Dear Jebus. 900mhz and GF2 MX? Buy the combo and a 7800GT. You will cream your pants. Once you're done doing that, you can always sell the Intel board on ebay or in the FS/FT forums and buy a good overclocking board for that CPU.

will that processor be fast enough for a 7800 gt ? if i wanted to save some money what lower priced video card would you guys recomend ?

theres no such thing as the "processor not handling it"

you have 2 main bottlenecks in a computer for gaming. The GPU, and the CPU. If you keep your video settings high enough your CPU becomes totally unimportant. For example a new game on a 3 gig intel at 1600x1200 with AA/AF with yield almost the exact same frame rates as an FX57 with the same settings/vid card. Question is merely what settings do you plan on playing at. Do you like eye candy, etc...If you play lower settings the CPU takes the brunt of the load and you'll benefit from A64...however

seeing as how its an awesome deal, just go for it. You really cant beat free/cheap stuff especially with the upgrade it will be. Be it AMD or Intel, you'll be happy either way. Intel boards OC fine. The BIOS for it are just a little less fancy.

a 7800GT will run just fine in a system with that processor, but to use the 7800GT to it's fullest potential you will want something faster. If you wanted to save some money you could look at X800XLs and 6800GTs.. Newegg has a refurbished 6800GT for $220 right now.

go for it. you wont be disapointed reguardless

and i would suggest either a 6800GT or a 7800GT. both are awesome cards.

YES, that processor will be fast enough for that card. That was a stupid question lol. Seriousy dude if you can get that shit for half price, or free. Nothing should stop you at all. It' will be a hop, skip, and a jump better than what you have. You should even have to ask, just do it. I am an AMD man too.

Also, I am in your boat as well.

????? Mobo
733mhz Athlon
128mb RAM
nvidia Vanta.
Win 98se

I don't matter but yes, i think the processor can handle a 7800. Sure, AMD does own intel to a crisp in most games.... but it's not like intel computers are completely worthless. Especially dual core. I would sure as hell like to play with an intel dual-core comp.

Go for the cheaper option, just be prepared for a very warm cpu. I mean, actually raising the temp of your room, depending on its size. Don't let the wonderfulness of AMD scare you away from intel. They've been at the game a long time and put out a decent product. RIght now, tweakers like us are a nice crowd that don't interest them.

IMO, go for it. You'll have a great computer.

well i run games at 1000x720 i havent gotten into the new games yet do i dont know what resoultion i will play at

i just want something that will last as long as possiable last game i played on my pc was dungeon siege 1 cuase my geforce 2 cant play anything else lol

and one more question do the dual core processors OC well ? im looking at the intel forum and cant find anything :-(

with really good cooling they will, otherwise, no.

intel boards will not OC, period

im going to ditch the intel motherbaord sell it on ebay or soemthing and get this

ASUS P5LD2 LGA 775 Intel 945P ATX Intel Motherboard 127.50
and 2 gigs of ram can anyone recomend ram and a good overclocking hsf ?

There is more of a difference than that. You are correct in that at some point the CPU won't matter much. The difference between each CPU say, past a A64 3500+ isn't alot. But there is a huge difference between the bottom CPU, like a Pentium 2.8GHz vs. a Athlon FX-57.

Still, if the original poster is getting the Intel bundle, with the Pentium-D 820 and motherboard, it's a good deal. It is enough video card for a 7800GT. Don't worry about that. Yes faster CPU's will net you higher FPS, but as was said before, not huge amounts.

Yeah, Corsair XMS 2 Pro C4 PC5400 is DAMN good stuff. It OC's like mad. (I know, I am running some on my chiQs P4 rig.)

whew that ram is wayy to much for me lol anykinda of ram for under 180 bucks maybe ?

is ram imprtant if i overclock on a intel platform ?

why not just pick up a gig instead of two? Yeah, two gigs is better but if you can't afford it, why not het one? It will be far much better than what you currently have. As of now, there is only BF2 that would beed 2 gigs.

If you want to go with 2 gigs anyway, you could get some regular crucial ram. It does not have the best timings but it is still affordable. Good timings will give like a 5% boost in performance, but 2 gigs will allow your PC to never swap on the HDD. But for now, a gig is still enough. Your choice.

At high resolution it doesn't really matter. I don't notice a difference between my old A64 3400+ and P4 3GHz at 1600x1200. When the game is video card limited, the CPU matters less. In the other cases, you might be able to tell the difference in a benchmark.

QFT. Even though AMD's do perform better in gaming than Intel, Intel is still good for gaming. You can either choose between 100 FPS with Intel or 150 FPS with AMD. They are both really good FPS.

The way I see it these days, if you want a dual core CPU, definitely get a AMD. If you want a single core CPU definitely get a Intel processor with HT technology.

Get the Intel chip. The difference in gaming between that and a top end AMD is minimal, and the Intel with own the AMD in encoding, video editing, photo editing, etc. Plus, with an Intel chip and an Intel chipset you have ultimate in stability.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother e-baying the Intel mobo to get another one. With a system based on an 820, especially come from what you are coming from, you are going to have so much more speed than what you are used to that you won't have to bother.

I'll throw in my $.02 as I always like to do. I did notice a change in some games when I went from my Pentium 550@3.9GHz to my AMD Athlon 64 3800+. I didn't notice a change in every game, but many of them I did. It wasn't earth shattering, but I could feel it.

I noticed the slightest drop when I went from my Athlon 64 3800+ to my dual AMD Opteron 246 machine. It wasn't big, and I didn't care because I could multi-task like a madman and the system was smoother and more responsive. All my game benchmarks did drop quite a bit though. The 400MHz difference between my A64 and my Opteron was missed. Even with the added L2 of the Opterons.

Now, with my Opteron rig, I noticed HUGE changes in FEAR and Far Cry when I switched from dual 246's to dual 254's. In UT2004 I noticed nothing. Not a huge surprise. It doesn't take much to run that game well. Right now, those are the three games I have installed. I haven't had much time to play anything that much lately. So I haven't bothered to re-install alot of my games.

Of course none of my machines since my Pentium 4 550@3.9GHz got bad frame rates. I have noticed improvements for the most part on my upgrade path. The 7800's and going beyond a gib of ram probably helped more than the processors did to be sure. However, in FEAR, the new CPU's helped ALOT.

It wasn't massive mind you, it really only showed up in a couple games. Mainly Republic Commando. That one I noticed the biggest change with. Although at the time, nVidia hadn't fixed the driver profiles for SLi so they could be edited, and the game didn't have a driver profile at all yet. So that game ran on one 6800GT. But yes I noticed the improvement.

At 2.65GHz on my 3800+ I noticed a VERY slight increase in performance again. It is true that you can get excellent frame rates on lower end CPU's, and you don't need the highest end badass CPU to get a game playable at higher resolutions. However it's BS to think that the higher end CPU's don't do anything at higher resolutions. If they didn't, then why would we bother overclocking and or spend money on high end CPUs? When you reach a certain plateu with processors, the increases from one to the next diminishes. At the lower end it makes a much larger difference. The difference is, the plateu with AMD A64's is somewhere around the 3500+ or so, whereas with the Intel's its around 3.6GHz or better that your returns are smaller on the higher clock speeds.

ok here are the choices i can get tomoroow my mom's boss has a few extra processors i can choose either one of those and pay pretty much half

Intel Pentium D 830 Smithfield
Intel Pentium 4 650 Prescott

which one should i go for ?

if you only game then AMD is the way to go. If you multitask a lot, and handle media, and game then intel is probably better for you. The difference between both cpus in gaming isnt huge but its still considerably better in almost all cases.

id go with the D 830 smithfield.

did you read the thread? if hes getting intel at half price, its the only way to go.

In gaming CPUs are still vid-card limited at the high-end. The reason many people overclock is twofold 1: they like to get the most performance they can get for their money, 2: a lot of people have better things to do with their PCs than play games.

go for it. i game on an intel p4 3.2GHz with a 6600GT PCIe and i play bf2 all medium settings, FEAR MP, BFV, CoD demo, and get awesome frame rates. i don't care what anyone tells you, intels can game. sure amd's can get a few frames per second more than intels can, big whoop. i love my intel pc and nothing can change that.

I am not saying they aren't video card limited. Obviously they are or we wouldn't see performance increases with video card upgrades either. The fact of the matter is that you need a high end CPU paired with a high end video card for the best performance. Same goes with the CPU. You need a high end video card paired with a high end CPU. If you put a Geforce FX 5200 with an FX-55, you're gaming performance will still suck.

no joke.

Im running a PCX5300 (which is a pcie 64bit 5200) on my X2 right now cuase the GT is at BFG :(

it scored 241 in 3dm05. yes. two hundred and fourty one.

FEEL THE POWAH!!!!!

But is it fast enough to navigate the Doom 3 menus, because my Radeon 7000 32MB PCI wasn't. :D

Intels can game fine, just make sure you are running atleast 1gb of ram on a Dual Channel motherboard, and running 6800GT / 7800GT/X / X1000 series

If your folding for the horde, a Dual Core with HT will come in handy!

Seconded. ;) Forget the AMD. Like many said before me, it only matters if you want "the best" CPU for gaming (AMD), or "good enough" for gaming (Intel). This may all change though next year when Intel will release their Über new monster chip... :D

That's true. If your a seriously hardcore gamer, like myself, then AMD is really the only choice. Even if your hardcore, but want to save cash, and you get a good deal on an Intel, you'll be fine using it.

In fact, you get the bennefit of using Intel's chipset based motherboards. Which are about as freaking stable as possible.

i <3 my intel boxen.

read: also, i have no problem running any game I want to with just about any configuration of settings i would ever want.

Not that you're prejudiced against Intel cpu's, or anything like that -- how could I even think such a thing. And btw, what are you doing over here in the Intel Processors forum -- isn't there a forum just for you AMD-ophiles next door?
