Intel Engineering Samples

How early before a chip is officially released does Intel have engineering samples available? I'm curious if there are any engineering samples of Ivy Bridge or Haswell? I'm pretty sure that Rockwell engineering samples would not yet be available due to 16nm, but I do believe Intel has successfully created 22nm chips by now.

Any ideas?

Probably long before any of us see the real deal. Why do you ask?

Last week Intel said it already had samples of Ivy Bridge. http://www.v3.co.uk/v3/news/2274247/intel-testing-22nm-chips "Intel may have only just launched its latest Sandy Bridge chips, but working samples of its 22nm successors are already being tested, according to the firm."

It is not atypical that Intel has CPU silicon 12 months or more before launch.

It was around 16 months ago that Intel first publicly showed 22nm wafers, test memory chips containing 2.9 billion transistors each. If 16nm is on schedule, Intel will probably do a similar demonstration at Fall IDC. 22nm Haswell silicon might be about 12 months away.
