Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8700 (6M Cache, 3.50 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)

45nm
TDP- 65w

Google + Cache, as the original link from Intel is down.

I had always thought the e8600 was the last in line.

I wonder if this CPU will allow better overclocking, if not, you may as well keep your E8500 and E8600.

But the 3.5Ghz stock speed is nice if you don't want to overclock.

If this thing overclocks as good as the other E8xxx chips, it will be the ultimate gaming chip. I agree, 3.5Ghz stock is really nice, i wonder what price tag they'll slap on this monster.

E8600 is what? $260? I predict $305.

Overclocking might be a mixed bag, this chip can be the same as a E8600 just clocked higher stock, just gonna have to wait and see, Intel is really surprising me, their really making me think twice on the E8000 series.

It still seems like the E8500 is the real deal at around $187. I'm not sure how the E8500 overclocks but I bet most people can get it up to around 3.5GHz easily.

i know people hit around 4.7-4.8ghz with E8600 on air. you should be able to do 4.5ghz easily if you have a good cooler.

ehh, the only thing your getting is a 10.5x multiplier. i dont think 5ghz on air is possible on this.

E8600 is already reaching low quad price ranges, I don't think they would introduce a newer dual core because they are moving to quad. It is the inevitable pacing of technology. They have many quad models out now, and it doesn't seem that another dual core would do much good.

Regardless of the quads, though, how much extra clockspeed headroom are on these chips? I doubt much, because even the current E8x00 models are running at extremely high speeds. I think that it may be a case of Intel pulling profits from the high end. They are just increasing stock clockspeeds, when anyone could achieve these results with overclocking. It will be interesting to see.

Q8200 is $170~ thats below E8500 $185~. Granted I don't think you should buy a Q8200 over an E8500. But some people will only look at prices and cores.

I dont think this Processor is happening...

I'm guessing its probably a Canceled processor...

This processor was just announced like yesterday or the day before. This is a brand new processor and going to be the last in the Core 2 Duo line

I'm happy with mine at stock.

Looks like its going out with a bang. Exciting processor.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550S 2.83GHz 12MB - 65W - $369

This looks like to be around the speculated price of the e8700.

For my needs (gaming), the e8700 still works out best.

if you know where to look you can get one for around $150 or so. i know about 25 guys who did.

There is very little reason for intel to not to release this processor.

This processor is made at the same time with the same process as all the other Core2Duo chips. If a chip tests well, then they will bin it and it will get a higher multiplier.

Since it is going to be the fastest Core2Duo, it isn't going to cannibalize any of intel's other sales, like the atom. There is only upside for this chip. If a person wants to pay 300 dollars for this chip instead of 266 for the e8600 than that is another 34 dollars of pure profit on a chip sell. If they charge $317 (the 9650 new price) that is 51 dollars more profit.

Finally if they are having the e8700 than means all the perfect bin chips won't go to the e8600, and that means their is some upward binning. Some chips which were planning on being e8400 becomes, e8500, e8500s become e8600, etc. Remember binning isn't just about whether the chip is stable at the frequency and cache it is also about whether their is demand at those prices.

--------

And this chip does have a purpose, just not for overclockers. The processor at 3.5 gigahertz stock still has a tdp of 65 watts. For most gaming systems that doesn't mean much you just need a big heatsink and a bigger powersupply.

Now if you consider putting it into a slimline/shuttle/small form factor case or even worse an all in one system and suddenly those extra 30 watts a quad juices out becomes a much bigger deal.

On air, I have my e8500 happily runs at 4.1ghz without touching voltage, 4.275ghz (450x9.5) with 1.25v core in BIOS (1.20 in cpuz). Needs some better ram to go higher. I agree, there is no reason for Intel not to release this chip, since there are people who do not overclock. I'll wait to see OC performance numbers on this to judge -- if the e8700 can do the same 30-40% overclock on air that the e8500 can do, that's pretty exciting for people wanting to hit the magic 5ghz mark. If all it offers is the same 4.2-4.5ghz OC you can get on an e8500, just at a lower FSB, I don't really see the point in spending the extra cash.

Rumor has it that the E8700 is to take over the current price point of the E8600. If this is the case, the E8600 is to drop to $204. I've heard of the E8600 price drop since mid-December and it was supposed to happen around January 18th. Time will tell.;)

they go well beyond 3.5 on air easy.
seems like it could be a successful overclocker with the higher mult at the e8600 price

Hey, I got my E8700! There are only two of these OEM E8700's around at the moment. Anyone interested in the performance of the E8700 can follow Fearlessleaders thread at Overclock.net. He is watercooling his on a P45 board for some low voltage Overclocking trials. :D

Fearlessleader has started a build log for his E8700. The chip has been installed in a Gigabyte EP-45 board with a kool lance watercooling rig. Anyone interested in the baptism of an E8700 can follow the thread at Overclock.net under Intel General build logs. :D

E8700, while a nice chip and all, seems a bit too late in the game at this point.

32nm Dual-core Clarksdales should be right around the corner and are superior to a Wolfdale Dualcores in pretty much every aspect. The lower process should shine in low power usage and OC headroom, not to mention Nehalem architecture is faster than Core 2.

This thread is almost a year old. I doubt they'd actually release it at this stage. Just two lucky guys got this chip as it was not supposed to be made. A year ago this would have been pretty sweet to have! Hell, I wouldn't mind one now. ;)

Yeah, this is a year old but why is the price of an E8600 around $279 on NewEgg....$275 on Pricewatch.com?

That is why. You can pick up a used E8600 from $125-$160 if you troll HardForum, Ebay, Overclock.net, etc. You will need some patience, but it can be done. An E8600 wiith fast memory is great performer.

On a side note, why does it take 50 posts to be able to post on the For Sale thread? Brutal.

i used to have an e8400 at 4.5 back in the day. i'm amazed these still are being sold actually.

starting price $240 eh, how much do they sell for?

If you want a dualcore, it makes much more sense to go with a Clarkdale now. Or even a Phenom X2.
