Intels Dual Core Processor Solution is comming into the picture this comming year. Now we do not know too many details, but there are a few questions I have.

I have heard that these processors will be based off the Shorter Pipelined Pentium M Core, Offering more processing power at a lower clock speed and lower heat output.
However now I am hearing these cores will be based off the prescott core? Does anyone have anymore information? and any speculaion on what we will see / Like to see if these processors.

AFAIK there are several families of dual core CPUs on the roadmap but it can change. CHeck anandtech for more info, can't help with more than that.

I think Intel originally intended to make dualcore CPUs with the Prescott core to begin with. It'll take a miracle to cool it I bet.
 
There was an announcement on the frontpage, it's gone now. The first dual-cores, named smithfield, will be based off the prescott core and be available in speed grades of 2.8, 3.0, and 3.2 GHz. They will be socket 775 but will require a new motherboard because of changes to the motherboard's memory controller.

Great article. Looks like processor speeds are just about to hit a brick wall. FX-57 and the A64 4200 is the best AMD will get for most of next year? That's only a 200 MHz bump. And after Intel releases these dual cores with a max speed of 3.2 GHz, they have no plans to ramp up speeds until 65nm. I have a prescott @ 4GHz. The only reason I could see upgrading the motherboard in the next year is if ATI or Nvidia releases some fantastic card that is only available in PCI-Express.
I guess on the bright side I can save some of the money I would blow on computer parts. :D

IMO if intel really wants to rape AMD, they need to put all they're R&D into the Pentium M cores. Dual Core Dothans would give me wet dreams for months. :D
 
I have benchmarks here from a Pentium M at 2.56GHz that just about smokes everything...
 
man, dual core P4 needing a new motherboard wil be quite annoying, one of the reasons I upgraded was my hope I could just pop in a dual core CPU end of 05 for a cheap upgrade, looks like this wont work. Also I somehow doubt the dualcore boards will support DDR1 :(

it's called 'Yonah,' part of the 'Napa' platform (next gen Centrino, chipset, graphcis, and wireless) But it's a 65nm part so don't expect it before 2006.

Smithfield will be the primary dual core chip, serving both top end desktops and Xeons,

Montecito core Itaniums will start showing up in 2005 as well (and will break the bank at over 1 billion transistors).

I've heard rumors of this but nothing concrete. What board manufacturers are planning this move to 915 with Dothan?
 
A 915-based motherboard with all the extras attached (PCI-E and what not) that supports Dothan and I would buy it in a second.

I dont care who wins. whoever brings out the best dualcore processor i will buy. now i wouldnt touch intel with a bargepole. poor dell customers dont know what they are letting themselves in for
