Intel D940 seems sluggish..

Hi Guys,

My D940 seems to be going sluggish... in fact it seems slower than the D920 I built last week...

I am particularly dissapointed with the stuttering in games, especially NFS: MW.
(and i have tried all the supposed fixes for dual core processors...)

My specs are:

Intel D940
ASUS P5LD2 Deluxe mobo
4 x 1GB Kingston DDR2
XFX Geforce 7900GT
Modified Lian-Li chassis w/ Antec 550watt

I thought my hard drive may be stuffed (Seagate 120GB SATA), but all the tests I've done says it's okay...

CPU temps are okay... never gets higher than 54 degrees at peak.

So what am I missing ? Is there some burn-in /benchmark that I can run to see how it compares to other systems like mine ?

hmm... use something like diskeeper and defrag. Use avast to scan for viruses, and adaware to scan for adware. Sounds like that kind of problem. Or you could just format and restart on everything =). I'm not quite sure what else you could do. you covered everything i thought would cause those kind of problems

I think I'll get a new Seagate SATA2 drive from work...

And by the way, about the "modified" chassis - all that I did was cut a hole on the side and mounted a filter/grill on there

Is it running its correct speed? Check with CPU-Z to check if the proper clock speed/fsb is set. Also uninstall your video card drivers with driver cleaner pro and install the latest ones. Is it just sluggish in games? Try running 3dmark 05 & 06 and then check your scores among others to see if it's at least in the same ballpark. I assume thats a dual core, if so do you have to install any sort of cpu driver or set core affinity like AMD x2? (Not too up to date on Intel)?

i think it is your video card. my brother has the exact same card, and his card is artifacting at STOCK speeds... its a total pos. he cant play CS: source, or FEAR at all... yet i can run them at high settings with my asus branded 7900gt. solution rma the card and get a new one. the xfx have some really bad reviews on newegg, all like i mentioned. it also makes his system lag like a bastad in gaming. his cpu is at 3.6ghz. mine is at 4.0 and my card clocks almost 100mhz on core and ram lower then the xfx, yet destroys his system in benchmarks.

matt00926, I checked speeds with cpu-z, and everything appears to be running at the right speeds... all the drivers are the latest. As far as I know there are not any additional drivers for the dual core, but you are correct about setting the affinity on some programs/ games.

viper650, can you post some benchmarks for me, and let me know what programs you are using to benchmark ? I'd like to do a comparison to see if my system is ok. I don't get any artifacts on screen while playing games...

my personal benchmark score is 56xx in 3dmark06 with 4.0 ghz and stock 7900gt settings of 450mhz core and 1350mhz ram. its not really artifacts as much as it is just horrible quality. my brother cant even play fear on LOW settings... thats saying something. i really think its your card. i dont have any of the problems he does, and we have both used each others cpu/ram. only variable is gpu.
