I may be upgrading soon, and with AMD's latest fiasco I think I may be leaning toward an Intel build. However I haven't really kept up with everything so I'm a little confused on all the different sockets. In the past I've picked a cpu/motherboard that will last me a while and has an upgrade path. The 775 lasted quite a while, and AM2+ boards can still take AM3 cpus. Looking at the Intel cpus on Newegg and there are several different sockets. I don't know what's current or if Intel is using more than one socket at the same time. What cpu should I be looking at...maybe in the $250 range?

I was an AMD fan for 12yrs and never built with Intel until 3 months ago and I will NEVER go back period! I was so disappointed in the Bulldozers and that caused me to consider Intel. The Intel i7 2500K is the best bang for the buck and will kill anything AMD has now and probably for some time to come. It overclocks like a champ! I still can't believe the performance difference with what I was using compared to what I have now. I stepped up to the i7 2600K and I LOVE it. Every single thing I do I notice a huge difference compared to my AMD Phenom x4 980. The i7 2500K will be in your price range since the i7 2600K is about $50.00 over your budget but if at all possible get the i7 2600K. Those CPU's use Intel 1155 socket. You will not regret going with any of those two chips.

What is your current setup?

The two most current sockets are the 2011 and 1155 . The 1155 is more of a mainstream setup . Even though the 2500k and 2600k can give the older top dog , 1366 a run for it money . The P67 and Z68 board will let you OC the "K" CPUs . While the H61 an H67 you can not do any CPU , OC . The 2011 was just released the not that long ago maybe two months? . And it more of the enthusiasts setup .

I just put a new system together for the the girlfriend and I am impressed with even the low end Pentuim G850 and H61 board .

Right now I have a Phenom II x4 955

Quick breakdown for you

Socket 2011 - Lots of PCIE lanes, Hexacore CPUs , very expensive
Socket 1155 - Cheap, fast (often faster than 2011 core for core), few PCIE Lanes

Generally go for 1155 unless you need loads of addin cards (raid cards ect)

both of these sockets are forecast to last at least 1 more generation, but after that you are on your own.
