Intel cpu types?

What is the differance in cpu's from a standard to an extreme edition? Just to use the P4 as an example, they have a P4 651 3.4GHz, 800 fsb, Intel part #HH80552PG0962M that can still be had new for around $100. Wile the P4 EE 3.4GHz, 800 fsb, Intel part #BX80532PG3400FS, still shows a new price of around $1,100.

What makes one worth a thousand dollors extra?

Mainly because it has no multiplier lock.

For example my E6600 runs stock with a FSB 266Mhz with a 9X multiplier, so 266X9 = 2.4Ghz.
To obtain a higher clock rate I would have to increase the FSB, while the Extreme editions have the choice of increasing both the FSB and/or the multiplier.

It's very rarely a good idea to get an Extreme Edition processor; current cheaper Intel processors overclock very well by raising the FSB, and the Extreme unlocked multiplier doesn't help much (since it's otherwise the same chip as its non-Extreme siblings). It might well mean that you can overclock a little further if you're FSB-limited, but you'd have to be very concerned about getting the maximum overclock for it to be worth considering such a huge price increase. It definitely isn't giving you a performance increase that's even slightly proportional to the price.

Extreme Editions can be seen as collector's items. The going price has nothing to do with what the product is actually worth.

The difference as stated is the unlocked multi. Whether or not they are hand binned has been disputed back and forth. BUT, there was some guy on here years ago that talked about what Intel does to make an extreme chip. He had some links to intel papers, job descriptions etc etc, and basically proved (as well as you can on the internet) that Intel just adjusts a setting on the machine that makes the chips so that the multi is unlocked.

It was an interesting read and it showed how it doesn't cost Intel one fucking cent more to make these Extreme Chips. Basically it boils down to this: If people would just stop purchasing extreme chips then it would probably only cost $50 more (pure speculation) to buy one. I imagine rich people and their toys will always keep the "good stuff" out of the middle class's hands.

No idea how I got off on this tangent, peace.

Damb, and I was hoping for something extra special. Typical corprate marketing bull shit. I'd never spend that much for that type of thing on purpse with out a real good reason. Mainly came down to I was given a "non functioning" Dell XPS Gen 3 to scrounge what ever working parts I could find out of it. Just turned out to be someone had played with the bios and hosed it up. Works fine now, but was hoping for more wistles and bells, but couldn't find any real differance between that and a vanila cpu. Oh well I'm not going to complane free is always a nice price.

Thanks for the input :)

But, but, but... It comes in a black box!
Black is cool and trendy, right?

does the extreme edition come with a heatsink?

amd's black editions didn't formely......

yes.

But getting a Xeon sticker is trendier (or atleast nerdier). To put it in terms you guys can understand, the EE is +4 stamina and +2 attack, but -256 bank, The xeon can be +1 intelligence (as you can get yorkfield Xeon), +4 stamina and +2 attack, and only -10 bank.

yeah but you'd never use it.

Shrewd marketing move on AMDs part, as enthusiasts, if your buying the Black edition, your going to use your own after market cooler anyways.

Superb Analogy....And I concur!

I found mine for only -5 Bank, and my new one in route was only -3 bank, but is indeed +5 intelligence

:D Man, I am still lauging at that!!!!

You also forgot to say the Warrior Maidens also go crazy when they see that Xeon Inside Sticker

no multiplier lock and they sometimes use better quality materals that they use on the xenons. and why on earth are you still lookin at p4's? lol

better quality materials...

What you mean they cut (what is the right word here) the silica or silicon in a different way?

It's the same silicon, but they bin chips depending on what speeds they can reach (the quality varies a little), and the highest-binned chips will go into the Extreme Edition CPUs. However, particularly in the case of Core 2 chips, nearly all the silicon is very good anyway, so there isn't much of a quality difference. You do have a chance of getting a particularly poor chip that won't overclock much beyond its rated speed, but that risk is pretty low with current Intel CPUs (and again not worth the price premium to the Extreme Edition).

I think that the consensus is that current LGA775 Xeons are pretty much exact equivalents of desktop chips.

To be brutally honest, I see no reason why you'd have a limited FSB if you're blowing thousands on a processor. I mean for a fraction of that you can get a great motherboard so you don't need to worry about FSB's. Personally, I think it's for gloating rights: "Yea, you may have a nice processor... but mine has an 'X' in the product code!"

if I was God, I'd kill you as soon as you bought an eXtreme CPU ... blowing $1,000+ on just the CPU? you got to be kidding me?!

Depends on how you look at it. I suppose we take overclocking for granted.
Most people don't.
It's something like saying: "Don't buy that Ferrari! We can put an NOx kit on your Pinto and it'll be faster anyway!".
So yes, to us it seems silly to spend so much for nothing really... but I think there are quite a few people who would want the "Extreme" just because of its status, knowing that you have the "top of the line".

you got a point there...

like having an xtreme setup with ddr3 and 2x 9800x2 in sli etc etc

I do enjoy my Xeon sticker. :D

Cat issue was temporary - no more hair!

Can't lie, the "Xeon" logo is pretty awesome.
None of my C2D's have come with any stickers.
:(

Oh cool the sticker is on the back of the manual.
*Finds all his manuals and covers case in C2D stickers*

heh yep, stickers are on the back of the manuals.

But if you got an OEM proc, no sticker for you :p

I got the QX9650 because I did not want to FSB overclock and I wanted a 790i Ultra motherboard which is still being reported as having data corruption issues and a lot of people are saying that its FSB overclock related.

At any rate, since the Core series overclocks so well, buying anything but the cheapest chip and overclocking to 4GHz is the only way for some, everything else is over priced.

Bottom line, 3.83GHz on 11.5. No FSB overclock, just upped NB,SB and CPU voltages. Rock stable thus far, just passed my 24 hour Prime 95 run. I just wanted maximum stability and a high overclock and a great SLI platform. There are cheaper ways but I wanted something that I figured would work and and seems to do just that. I've put my money down and gotten garbage. I spent the money and got what I expected. I'm happy.
