So I've finally decided to bite the bullet and upgrade from my current 2.0GHz P4 (haha 4yrs late). I'm an Intel whore, so I know I want to go that route, but there are so many options and I've been out of the game for too long.

I want it to be able to run just fine with Vista (since it's coming out this year, I figured it better) and handle games, office, and the like with ease. Obviously, if I had the money, I skip the post and just buy a Pentium D 955, but I don't think I can do that right now.

So, what do you guys recommend? I'd be game for OC'ing the thing (and if I do, air-cooler or water and what heatsinks/water setups do you recommend?). Thanks.
 
If you want to OC, just go with the Pentium D 920 and a Scythe Ninja. You should be able to get it up to around 4 GHz. However, if you can wait for Conroe, I would do so.

Your socket is 775? I think your in socket 478 arn't you?
 
I'd agree with the 920D and good cooling.

Not being an expert on Intel's Next-gen architecture, but my basic belief is we'll be seeing a heavily modified Pentium Pro from so long ago. In other words, the Pentium M, but with more features and more refined - say 64 bit and additional instruction sets.

Merely a shot in the dark, I could be right, I'm probably wrong...but then again, I could be right :D
 
If I were you I'd wait for Conroe. You've been using that CPU for so long now you might as well wait just 6 months.

1. The CPU is already gone. If I don't buy now, I'll be stuck on my Dad's old 1.4GHz Athlon system. Haha no gaming potential whatsoever.

2. What's Conroe gonna cost? I mean, I can build a pretty badass 920 D system for around $1000 (and that includes 2GB ram, X1300 256MB to hold me off til the DIrectX10 cards come out, and some fairly decent storage space)....
 
Thats socket 478 people ! . you can go either 3.2 Ghz or 3.4Ghz . both OC well with decent rams. .......and cooling!.

Well, just an update. I'm listening to you guys and waiting 'til the Conroe's are released. I bought my friend's AMD Athlon64 3000+, Asus mobo, and 1GB PC4200 for $175. Couldn't pass that up as a interim rig. :)

I really don't mean to hijack - but quick question:

I've been out of the loop for about 2 years now on new equipment. With the Conroe specs that have been released, they're all pretty low in processor speed. Do dual cores really make up that much of a difference?
 
conroe isnt just a p4 with dual cores, thats presler. conroe is an entirely new architechture, heavily based on the pentium M/Yonah.

For games or general mutiltask?
 
I'll be in for both. MMORPG, or something like Battlefield 2. When I'm not on the games, I tend to have a LOT of programs open at once. Considering building with 4GB of ram to slightly future-proof with the next machine.

check out AMD line of 2x 3800+ or slight above . and draw your own conclusion . is def cheaper than the blue guys. check out some reviews X vs Y . Im sure prices are important and the one that gives out the most bang for your bucks.
 
so how much longer do we have to wait for Conroe? I need an upgrade too.
 
Wait a little longer for the 975 boards that will support Conroe.

The Intel brand 975 is already supposed to support Conroe starting with revision 303 (being made now).

So I'd imagine the other brands like Asus P5wd2-E & Gigabyte, etc.. will support Conroe with a slight revision to the board probably within just a few weeks or month or so. Just keep any eye out for the information that "rev x.x support Conroe".

That way you can get a 920 now, or even 631 just to hold you over till Conroe.

If you're anxious and can't wait. A 920D at 4Ghz should last you a while. Mine is NICE!
