Intel Core 2 Duo Upgrade Suggestions??

So i'm upgrading my comp tommorow, and have already gotten advice about a potential AMD system, but I must admit that Intel's Core 2 duo is quite an impressive processor, so much so that I am contemplating switchingover to the Intel camp. So I was wondering if I could get a few pieces of advice from you intelligent people :)

I am looking for a reasonably priced CPU, mobo (and I guess I need DDR2?), what would you guys recomend for the best overclocking CPU, best mobo for overclocking and features, and same with ram, given that I don't want to spend too much? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Depending on your overclocking requirements vs. your budget, you can spend as little as $250 bucks to go to a conroe system, or as much as you want to spend.

How much u want to spend?

well 2 gigs would be nice, but if it means sacrificing a lot of performance then just 1 gig.

And sorry for my noobishness, i'm an AMD 'f*nboy', but I buy whats best, and intel's proc seems to be the best this time round. I just dont know much bout intel platform

I'm assuming you're not too much of a gamer- using the 9250.... This is not a flame, and hopefully not a flamebait..... just an observation.
What do you use the speed for, then?
I also wonder if you'll be stripping your amd system to move parts to the new one or need everything?

The current AMD system is being sold to a student. I only have the 9250 cuz my vid card (6800 ultra) fried, and i knew i'd be selling this system to someone.

I am buying a 7900 (not sure which of the 3 models yet ... but thats seperate from the point of this post).

I am looking for a system that runs smoothly, the computational power is needed for NMR data analysis (im a structural biochemist) ... but also just to have a smoothly running comp.

I am not a huge gamer no, but I want a good video card and all that for the games that I do play.

Theres not much that I can strip from the AMD rig, I would have loved to keep my DDR ram as its AWESOME ram, but im assuming that if i buy a core2duo I have to get DDR2 (or at least its in my best interest). I am keeping hard drive, and sound card *shrug*

I need CPU, mobo, presumably DDR2 ram, and video card (I consider this seperate from trying to figure out the core components of the system). O I also have a watercooling setup, so i'd like to overclock a bit obviously

I'm using DDR ram (Corsair PC4000PRO) in my C2D setup, along with my 6800GT agp card. There's a mobo that supports DDR1 and AGP, as well as conroe- The Asrock 775 Dual VSTA. It's not much of an overclocker (300FSB max) but it's stable, and cheap $57 bucks. I've decided not to move to PCIE until DX10 comes out.

I am really happy with my 6400. I would recommend one.

Also I would go for 2GB at all costs. So many reasons for it, and so little for 1 GB.

As for a Mobo I would just get yourself a cheap stop-gap untill all the players are on the feild. Most kinda suck right now. You have the Nvidia 590 on the horizon and the RD600 from ATI not far behind.

The ATI RD600 is supposed to have asyncronous FSB/Memory scaling, which if works, will be awesome for OC'ing.

My $0.02:)

that The Asrock 775 Dual VSTA mentioned has a pci-e slot, an agp as well as 4 pci slots. 2 ddr and 2 ddr2 slots for ram. it's one hell of a convenient board for the non-oc'r and those who dont wanna spend 200 bucks.
