Ok, so I got a "new" OEM P4 3.4C CPU. I really want a Prescott 3.4E but they still aren't anywhere to be found. Anyway, the CPU that I was sold has "INTEL CONFIDENTIAL" stamped on the heat spreader. The following text is on the CPU:

INTEL CONFIDENTIAL
Q340ES MALAY
I (M) (C) ’01 80532PG096512
L337A841

M337B763
0115

From what I knew of CPUs, this is a pre-production model or an engineering sample. And what was annoying about the whole deal was that there was this little "VOID IF REMOVED" sticker stuck to the CPU covering the "INTEL CONFIDENTIAL" stamp - as if to hide it. Well I didn't want some plastic/paper/gooey sticker between my CPU and heatsink so I removed it. Which is how I found the "INTEL CONFIDENTIAL" stamp. Bring it back or what? Thanks!

Ooh! Ooh! Check and see if the multipler is unlocked! If so, you got one hell of a chip.

Ok, and how would I do that??? Just go into BIOS and try changing some volts and freq. settings?

lol, sorry. Got a bit excited there. Engineering samples are very rare, and the multipler is unlocked, meaning you can overclock them by changing the mutiplier, bypassing the FSB. Install the cpu, get into the bios, and depending on your board, there should be an option to change the multiplier. Check the manual. If it is not greyed out in the bios, and you can change the number, then you definately have an engineering sample. I've been searching for one for a while, with no luck. Do you overclock?

edit: the default multiplier for a 3.4ghz is 17x.

No, I haven't OC'd before but I'm willing to try.

Motherboard: SuperMicro P4SCT+II

I'm building my new sytem this weekend and when I get home I'll try. I'll post when I have the sytem fully working.

You got yourself a great board there. Supermicro makes the most stable motherboards I've ever worked with. May I ask where you got the cpu? I might try to order one in the hopes of getting a ES.

I got the CPU at Memory Expo www.memoryexpousa.com but you don't know it's the "INTEL CONFIDENTIAL" until after you remove the "VOID IF REMOVED" sticker on the CPU. :) Paid $379

Ok, building the new system now and tearing this one out.

they still havem, but what are the odds of getting one of em ES, man i wish i had the cash right now :(

I ordered one, I'll post back when I get it. I like that site, they actually let you choose your core stepping.

good luck, if i had a US credit card and a US adress id get one too, only bad thing is i live in mexico, no cred card, no US adress, im screwed, i can only shop at the local stores in the San Diego area...

I wouldn't bother with an ES..

For one I would rather overclock by fsb, also I wouldn't want a prescott ES, I think anything ES is going to be a gamble considering its the first batch/gen.

what about a factory warrenty, I don't think intel would let you rma down the road right?

Well I got the system up and running. The CPU didn't have any locks on it. I can easily OC it... Nice. I guess I will be keeping this CPU afterall.

Aaron.

afaik ES CPUs are property of intel and can not be sold .. intel has been shutting down a few ebayers who tried to sell of their es'

Well I guess that confirms no Intel warrenty:p

ill take that cpu off your hands and give you a 3.0c that dooes 4ghz on air cooling hehe pm me if your intrested hell might even throw some cash in the mix too

Yes, the SuperMicro P4SCT+II motherboard CAN be used to OC the system. I'm not aware of the terminalogy, but I can change the (200 X 17) ratios...both the "200" part and the "17" part. I've already set the 200 to 215 and it's working just fine (3.655GHz). I'm using a Thermalright SP-94 cooled by a Thermaltake A2013 Cool Silent Cat 9CM then other case fans modded to the system. Stable. Havent tried any other ratios.

Can someone please tell me what the "ES" stands for?

That's pretty interesting if you did get one, I'd like to play around with an ES for sure. Although FSB overclocking works just fine for now.

I have lots of ES cpus, and they aren't as cool as everyone thinks. For one, the unlocked multi is nice, but early silicon ALWAYS sucks at OCing.

It's really cool that you got it from a retailer, though. I usually only find them on eBay or dumpster-diving.
