Intel Celeron D's and AMD Semprons??

Anyone try either of these processors out yet? How do they handle folding?

the Celeron D seems to be based off the Prescott core, so I'm assuming it runs pretty hot?
but for a retail 2.4GHz (533MHz bus) at newegg for $72 with free shipping........... and according to the HEXUS.net review that was linked on [H]ardOCP's front page, the 2.8GHz chip OCs quite well... and it's only $107 (+$1.99 s/h)

I haven't heard much about these processors... anyone have some folding experience with them? Is raw MHz the driving force behind a good folder? or is it the old floating point advantage AMD's processors always seem to have over Intel's? I know most of us have favored AMD chips for their low cost, and overclocks, but has Intel given us a new "cheap" CPU to consider?

Just wondering....

Keep on Folding!!

Someone just did a comparo of the Sempron 3100+ on 754 OC'd to 2.5GHz, and it was smoking damn near everything. I think it was with Air, too.

one of the best bang for the buck on the market at the moment.

Here is the link to the OC'ed Sempron article. It did perform very well.

X-Bit have also looked at the Celeron D.

They both appear to be good budget processors, something not often said about Celerys. It's definately a hard decision which to get for folding purposes. I'd probably just go with whichever was the cheaper option....then buy 2.;)

I bought a sempron 2200 ,oc't to 2600 (1964mhz) folds very good, using stock cooler.
cheap and fast :D

I think the reviews have shown that although Intel has gained big in the econo-market with the new Celeron “D” AMD still out paces them in both performance and TCO.

As for folding, I don’t think anything out paces AMD overall.

It looks like the Sempron 3100+ may be a great choice for the folding/general purpose box of today. It looks like it OC's like mad, folds like any AMD and plays games like an Athlon64. I need to check one of those out!

The socket A and socket 754 Semprons will likely fold just as fast as the same clock speed of Athlon XPs and Athlon 64s respectively. Cache size isn't really a barrier to folding performance.

The Celerons will also likely run as fast as P4s with the same clock speed, for the same reason.

Athlon based CPUs are better folders on average, but on Gromacs cores, the P4s do very well, so either CPU would work.

hmm though...if the Sempron OC's higher w/ cheaper cooling...the thing is, you need to look at the total end cost (TCO total cost of operation). i.e. which one draws less power (like the AMD Mobile 2400+ only draw something like 35w or 45w at full load :)) and which one OC's higher

my guess (i haven't read the articles, so don't act on this part) is the Sempron will cost less (electricity wise), OC higher, and fold better (on average, AMDs tend to fold very slightly faster over an extended period of time)
