hi all,

i want to make a new ultra low power gaming system and have recently discovered the Intel NUC systems..

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/inte...l-qs77-c847-11ghz-2xhdmi-ddr3-sodimm-5xusb-20

i was wondering what kind of games i could play on this and whether there would be any need in buying 1600mhz memory over the 1333mhz (its about half the price)

another option would be to go with a Haswell Pentium system which would likely consume more power

i will be mainly using the system for web browsing (1080p videos) and light gaming... counter strike, counter strike source & global offensive (if it even runs the latter two)

regards~

If you're looking at doing some light gaming I'd recommend an AMD APU. The iGPU on the 847 is slow, not to mention the CPU is a big bottleneck for any modern game. I have one myself and the only thing great about it is being a server or HTPC.

thank you for your reply..

would you say something like an AMD A4-4000 would be good then? how low could i tune the power down to? what kind of power consumption could i expect from web browsing etc?

that intel system was something like 10watts!!

The nuc is going to be hard to beat for power consumption numbers, especially if light gaming is only counterstrike... Just an fyi it looks like Gigabyte has the brix to counter the intel made nuc's and the pricing is a little less around here. Also the gpu on the haswell version is a HD5000 vs the hd2000 on the celeron http://www.anandtech.com/show/7072/intel-hd-5000-vs-hd-4000-vs-hd-4400 for raw hd performance.

how much is the haswell gigabyte one?

i dont really want to spend a whole lot of money!

i also live in uk

regards~

If you want to go with one of the SFF units that's cheap I'd go with the 1037u over the 847. It's baed on a new architecture, so faster clock for clock, plus it has a large clock speed advantage in the same power envelope.

HD 4000 gaming performance: http://semiaccurate.com/2013/04/15/putting-intels-new-hd-4000-drivers-to-the-test/

Celeron 847: 1.1 GHz Sandy Bridge based dual core w/HD 2000 based IGP Graphics
Celeron 1037u: 1.8 GHz Ivy Bridge based dual core w/HD 4000 IGP Graphics

Intel's 4000 is much faster than the 2000 based IGP. You could likely play older games on lower settings and get 30 FPS. Intel 4000 IGP is roughly comparable to a 7600 GT. From the link above HD 4000 gets about 35 FPS in CS:GO.

thanks for that, but apparently that is an incorrect listing of hd 4000 :S

i am also considering waiting for these:

i3 with HD 4400 gfx !

quite a bit more pricey than the celeron version though :(

would you say its worth it?

also, what kind of memory speeds could i get for the nuc? is 1600mhz maximum?

Wow apparently they do have the HD 4000 listed incorrectly.

If you're going to spend up in the 250 range, I'd look at a hawell I3 instead. Even if you initially go with the IGP (HD 4400), it also leaves open the opportunity to upgrade to a dedicated video card later on down the road.

is there a way of undervolting a non-k intel cpu?

eg if i went the way of mini itx with a i5-4570S.. could i undervolt this or even, limit its volts and cpu speed, while browsing/watching video content, then ramping up the speed and power when gaming?
