Intel Build trouble.

To start I will name my system specs.

ECS 915P-A rev 1.2
Pentium 4 640 OEM
Compusa 400 watt powersupply
1 gb ddr2 kingston 533
mx440 vidcard
CD/DVD drive samsung
zalman 9000 alcu heatsink w/ 775 kit

I was putting the system together yesterday, and I had put the cpu, heatsink and ram in, then I booted it to make sure everything was in right. It booted fine, so I attached everything else, and when I went to boot it, it gave me the please connect bootable medium message, so I hit enter and the system shut down. I went to boot it back up and the lights on the heatsink and the case fans lit up for a second then died.

I tried it again and it did the same thing. So I took everything apart and started from scratch. It booted up fine again. Then it would do the flicker thing when I tried to boot it again.

I am unsure what is wrong. The powersupply even though it is a 20 pin, should still be able to power everything. It booted twice.I am pretty sure nothing was fried because it booted up after it had flickered a couple times. I used arctic silver 5 between the cpu and the heatsink. I dont think it is a grounding problem, otherwise it wouldnt have booted the first time.

Do you guys have any ideas? I have built many systems, but they have been amd. I read the instructions that cam with the MB and I am pretty sure I didnt skip anything.

Besides ECS sucking up the place, that CompUSA PSU isn't going to cut it at all. Look for Seasonic, Antec, Fortron and etc... OCZ and ENermax or OK but I personally don't like either.

The MX400 Video card is a BIG NoNo as well.

I know the system specs are not impressive by any means, but it should still run. The mx440 is a holdover till my videocard gets here. I am going to replace the ECS in a month or so, but I got it in the package so I wanted to use it for a little while.

I know the power supply sucks, but I was hoping it would be able to power the system till I can get a new one.
 
Reset your bios to default. Make sure you have the latest BIOS as well.
 
Hit the button too soon. THEN, dont jack with any settings that you do not have to mess with in the BIOS. See what happens then....
 
I am not sure how to get the newest bios when the system will not boot. I am unsure what you mean by "hit the button too soon". I would imagine since I have not seen anything more than the boot sequence, it should still be at default settings. I havent been able to get into the bios yet either.

To be honest since I have posted I have not tried doing anything yet, as I am affraid or hurting anything, because I do not know what is wrong. The fact that the lights flicker on, and then off makes me hesistant to mess with it.

Many of the older Power Supplies are BSing when they post PSU specs. A cheap PSU might Peak for a few secs at 400 Watts so that's what they sell it as. Normal Market rating on such PSU might only be 200W or even less. Then there amprages that some don't even come close to supplying. Try an Antec 430W 2.0 (these will feature a 24Pin Power connector. Even if you later only use a 20 pin, 4 pins will disconnect to revert back to standard (my 550 Antec is like that). Get one from your local CompUSA and return it if that doesn't solve the Problem. No, not just any PSU will do. A good Mobo and PSU is the foundation of any system IMHO. I've put off at least 3 builds when I didn't have enough or a good PSU for it.

Now, I'm not a 100% certain that's your problem but I'am about 97% sure ;)

The PCI video cards shouldn't cause much of a problem besides sucking performance wise. Now if that's AGP, there are certain older cards that these board makers warn folks not to use, I'm really not sure if the MX400 is one of them though.

Antec 380W TP

Main Connector 20+4-Pin and that's at a bare minimum.

Best Deal? Costs more but.

I actually went this morning and bought an enermax 430 watt power supply to test it, and it still did not work. I then took it back to where it came from and they tested it. The board would not do anything, so they gave me a new one and it is working, I am actually typing on it now, while stuff installs.

Thanks for the help guys, it is nice to know there is somewhere to go when in need.
