I've got an Intel Bad Axe 2 D975XBX2 with an E6600 overclocked to 3.0Ghz (333MHz x 9 multiplier) and 2GB of DDR2-1000 RAM. The motherboard has the latest BIOS (version 2838). I've recently gotten a GTX 275 that I run at 1680x1050, so I'm probably a bit CPU limited, but upgrading the CPU seems non-trivial. Here's the official CPU support list for the motherboard:

The cheapest option of any of those that could conceivably be an upgrade is the Q6600, which goes for $170 used on Amazon (the X6800 and QX6800 are still super-expensive), but I'm not really convinced that it would be much of an upgrade.
I find forum posts in which it's rumored that later BIOS versions unofficially support 45nm Yorkfield CPUs, and a few people are able to get an E8400 to work while people who reply to those threads report failure. I'm not really willing to gamble $168 on that. The threads I found were these:

I haven't taken the E6600 higher than 3.0Ghz because that was quite sufficient for the 8800GTX I used to have, and it's been stable as a rock for 2 years now. I'd hate to mess with it without doing a more significant upgrade like a 45nm dual or quad. Also, the E6600 is air-cooled with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, which is really nice and quiet but probably isn't meant for extreme overclocking.
Any thoughts? Should I just leave it as it is and not mess with what's working? Or is there better proof of a 45nm CPU working in the Intel Bad Axe 2?
