We’ve posted a press release from Intel this morning covering the launch of five new Intel Atom processors. Feel free to leave your thoughts / comments here. Hit the link for pictures and video.

Intel Corporation today introduced five new Intel® Atom™ processors and Intel Centrino® Atom™ processor technology for Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and embedded computing solutions. The technology package includes the Intel® Atom™ processor (formerly codenamed "Silverthorne") plus a single-chip with integrated graphics called the Intel® System Controller Hub that enables PC-like capabilities, an uncompromised Internet experience and long battery life in smaller devices that can fit in your pocket. Manufacturers around the world are planning to ship Intel-based MIDs beginning this summer.

MIDs are truly mobile devices that enable the best Internet experience in pocketable devices. MIDs will allow consumers to communicate, entertain, access information and be productive on-the-go, and are expected to represent a new class of next-generation, Internet-based portable video players, navigation devices, converged tablets and other consumer products.

Formerly codenamed "Menlow," Intel Centrino Atom processor technology includes the company's first-ever Intel Atom processor (formerly "Silverthorne"). The processor – Intel's smallest and the world's fastest chip under 3 watts – has a thermal design power range1 of 0.65 to 2.4 watts* (versus 35 watts for today's typical laptop), average power range2 of 160-220 milliwatts (mW) and idle power range3 of 80-100mW.

I'm confused - Will these chips be available to purchase and put in standard motherboards? I'd love to have a desktop with the ability to play HD video that has a 2.4 watt TDP - perfect HTPC material.. This would also make an excellent Home server base machine.

Do you think intel held this in Shanghai to derail AMD's "Shanghai" processor.. Do a google on Processor and Shanghai now and you get a bunch of intel stuff too.. clever..

Im holding off building a home server, because i really want this processor powering it. Can't wait till its released.

I read somewhere that they will be soldered/embedded to the mainboard, like the current Intel D201GLY2 boards/cpu are.

These are desperately needed for things like set top Blu-ray players (which can take up to two minutes to bootup and load a disc)

Amazing how small it is - they look to be trying to push it into the old TSOP sized packaging, which was and still is a very popular method of attachment.

I would not be surprised to see a TSOP-II (or a better name) soon, with maybe a 320+ pin attachment.

Anandtech has a pretty good write-up on the atom on their site now. I read through it. I'm not saying I understood it all, but the atom seems very promising. Have x86 in everything will be great for developers. The next steps in the atom line (atom2??) will be real killers in the market.

From what I have been reading, the integrated GPU for the chipset (developed by third party using PowerVR SGX graphics core) will technically be able to decode at 1080, but the graphics output will be limited to 1366 x 768 ouput.

Those looking at the atom for htpc are probably better off looking elsewhere until the next generation of Atom. I have been recommending the amd 780g has a motherboard chipset coupled with a low wattage am2 cpu at the moment.

None of that matters to me until getting an internet connection from my mobile phone carrier costs less. I refuse to pay a fortune for a data plan or a hot spot subscription.

I'd certainly like to see these platforms as a sequel to the little valley boards. Shame that the IGP solution won't compare to something like the 780G for a really decent HTPC.

anybody notice they were running 3DMark06 on it towards the end? Starting at about 2:31? Wasn't running TOO badly for something with that low power use........

can't wait, gonna rebuild my router, torrentbox and file server using those
