Intel Atom as a base for a NAS?

I have one of the super micro boards that has a dual core 1.6GHz Atom and 4GB of ram. It also happens to have 6 SATA ports that got me wondering how this would do as a NAS with four or five 2TB drives. I already have this thing which is why I'm considering using it.
 
My gut feeling is that it'll be severely CPU limited when serving up data via SMB.
 
I have a similar server (supermicro below) with an Atom dual core 1.6ghz...with 2GB memory and server 2008 R2.

Works pretty well for flexraid, though when calculating parity it can take time.

If you're not going to use any kind of software RAID with parity, it should be plenty fast to serve files over SMB/CIFS.

As long as you have gigabit ethernet, you can get full speed of the drives in the computer over gigabit ethernet with SMB or FTP. 70MB/s-100MB/s + on sequential reads

I was thinking that I'd go with a i3 or i5 and do some kinda VM server with lots of drives & ram so I can do a bunch with it including a NAS. Thoughts?

That sounds like quite a interesting server setup you have there! How's the CPU utilization with it under heavy read/writes?
 
I probably have the same mobo as you, currently running FreeNAS 8.2 with 6x3tb/4x2tb raidz2 setup and it's been great. Plenty fast for media streaming (45-60MB/s avg writes), quiet and stable. Very capable system.
 
Why not use like an i3 and enable power saving features? They idle at a few watts and I doubt it will be under constant load for long.

I might have the budget to go with a i3 in a few months. But I wanted to see what those here thought about the dual-core atom board. If a i3 is a must then by all means let me know. But if a DC Atom will do in a pinch (6-8 months, maybe longer) then I'll run that for a while.

Atom can't be justified for a custom server. If you go atom it is in a purpose built nas by one of the big nas guys, and you do that for size and ease of management
 
The memory might not be limited to 4Gb of RAM either, which would definitely help ZFS:

Yeah after reading a bit more info about this online I think I may go with a xeon build with 16-32GB ECC ram. Going this route I'd want to build a multipurpose server. That being a few VMs with one being the NAS.
