Has anyone had any experience with this? I'm looking at a board that has an intel atom 230 processor on it and I'm curious if it is capable of playing anything high def.

I wouldn't expect it to be able to play blurays.. but I'm curious what the max it could do is.

Nope, it won't play HD.

At the very least you'd need an Atom 330 with an ION chipset, but even those aren't great.

I'd like to get a smaller footprint than a regular matx system case.

the ability to play SD/DVD stuff without issue, and maybe the possibility to do high def stuff (bluray rips).

any suggestions?

Yeah, mITX. Newegg has several boards, Zotac has an AMD 8200 board and a Intel s775 board. Intel has a G45 board and soon a s1136 board (that has video out support).

What kind of a case would I need for one of them? Do they have "media center" cases? I'd like to keep the cost down as much as possible and def don't need anything fancy.

As for a case I would highly suggest getting a case that isn't too large but also not too small. You don't want to starve the system of air. Take a look at Antec's 1480, that's what I would suggest using.

I'm running an Acer AspireRevo 1600 for a frontend and even with an atom 230 and ION chipset it handles 720p rips flawlessly. With hardware acceleration now, for my money its more about the graphics processor than the cpu. let the GPU do the heavy lifting and the ION seems pretty capable.

my 2 cents.

I don't know what your budget is, but I'd consider a Mac Mini.

It's $600 + Tax new, or $500 + Tax refurbished at Apple. The remote is $15-20, and you can just install Windows 7 on it. It's got a 2.26GHz C2D and a 9400m. Has played everything I've thrown at it.

Overpriced, even more so when you add in the cost of Win7.

Ditto that. the Acer Revo with hardware accel will actually do 1080p flawlessly (~10-15% CPU). I use XBMC installed on Ubuntu for my media player which takes advantage of the hardware acceleration. For $200, it is hard to beat.
