Intel announced its first mobile Extreme Edition CPU yesterday, the Core 2 Extreme X7800. The 2.6GHz dual-core processor features 4MB of L2 cache and an 800MHz front-side bus, making it the new high-end chip in Intel's mobile lineup.

Like Intel's other mobile product offerings, the Core 2 Extreme X7800 includes such power-saving features as a dynamic front-side bus, which lets the system drop into a "low-frequency mode" to conserve energy, and Enhanced Deep Sleep, which uses less power when the system is idle.

44W TDP! Looks like it's going into DTR-type laptops.

I'll be the first to say this:.... WHY?!

There are to many people with too much money to waste and I wished I was one of them :(

Well the extreme for desktops I can understand (as I have one), but for the extreme in notebooks, I don't get other than just trying to sell people things at more money. You can't exactly overclock in a laptop, you don't have the cooling capacity, and you have a very limited platform.... so really, it's just the name you are paying for.

For the most part you are correct, but Dell does make one that has bios settings that let you over clock it with decent results.

And i do tend to agree that it is more of a money maker than anything else....it allows them to put something out in the press for their mobile market since the only thing they have done recently is upgrade the FSB from 667 to 800 mhz

Just wait until the fully WC laptop, then you can do EXTREME over clocks. :p
