Intel says that human error led to some documents no being preserved in its ongoing lawsuit with AMD.

The day after AMD filed suit, Intel preserved the data on its network, and later sent notices asking about 600 employees to retain specific information, the company said in its letter to Farnan. However, it did not instruct those employees to preserve e-mails from their "sent" folders, and since Intel automatically erases e-mails older than a few weeks or months--depending on the employee--those messages could be gone.

And...Intel has a leg to stand on. Our company has this same protocol...I think our sent items is less than 1 week before auto-purge. Deleted items is daily. Inbox is 1 month. Therefore if you want to save something you need to be proactive about it.

And I suppose a GIANT company like intel doesnt backup there mail servers? lol

They had court orders to not purge yet they continued to do so anyways. I dont think it's 100% by accident. I'm sure a few incriminating document got "accidentally" purged. They figure the consequences of that are better than helping AMD in their case. With a company the size of Intel though you need quite a few monitors to keep track of what they are doing. A fine of a few ten thousand dollars per document lost might help encourage them to retain the documents they have been instructed to not trash like they are now.

Oh they weren't allowed to purge... ouch...

Sounds like an enron tactic... "just shred it"

AMD identified 74 people's documents they wanted. I think I read that they can request Intel to hold the documents of up to 275 people.

Well we cant edit so I'll just add this. There are court monitors that are supposed to be watching Intel to make sure that they dont "purge" or delete the documents of the people in question.

"Everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong," they claim.

The lawyers then followed that up saying, "Although Intel has agreed to restore all data captured in the thousands of backup tapes it made and preserved, no one can say with any degree of confidence that this will put Humpty-Dumpty back together again."

So everything is tape backed up at least.

hell does ANY company properly track and store documents? i have yet to see a single company who manages this kind of stuff well, there are always folders all over with parts of projects and other crap. have fun putting it all together if you were not the one who made it.

thats strange for intel my company keeps all emails everything is sent to iron mountain

Well to be fair to Intel:

The day after AMD filed suit, Intel preserved the data on its network, and later sent notices asking about 600 employees to retain specific information...

they should have said:

DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING!

But you and I both know (look around at your co-workers) that out of 600 people...none of which were told to save their "sent" messages, there were going to be some screw ups.

Like the article says, it makes them look bad....especially if there wasn't anything bad in the sent messages.

This stinks. The call centre my wife works for has emails going back to 2003 on tape back up.I dont for a minute believe Intels side of this story at all. They were ordered by a court to save it all.
