Do you guys know how does the intel warranty works. I have a 980X that has been fed a little too much voltage.
How long is intel's warranty >? Should I try or just grab a 5670 from ebay.>?

I think the warranty on Intel Processors were only 3 years from date of purchase..

Yeah, Looks like boxed CPUs were three years. Mine was a second hand. It was free. A gift from a ggod friend. It was running stable at 4.4 Ghz. The thing was it took 1.4 on the vcore to run this fast. Took 18 months to bake.
This made me a little skeptical about overclocking my 5930K. It does run stable at 4.7 and 1.3 core voltage. I just don't want to replace it in two years.

What were your temps like and how much was it on? I'm rolling 1.35 on my X5670, I'd prefer to not crisp it if possible

High 60's to low 70's. The pc was on for about 12 to 14 hours a day sleep mode at night. It did a lot o Bf3. 3500 hours. About 800 hours of BF4. VMware, Bitcoin , but that didn't tax the cpu since the 4 gpus were doing that.
When my son started using it everything was set to default He shot the thing down and it never started back up. I don't know how much torture the previous owner subjected it to. I would not be surprised if it was under LN2 :) I have to put a 5670 in this thing. Promised my son with school end in june. He can have his own pc. The kid is only 6, but wants to use all my toys already. Cant say no to that :)

Yeah, grab a 5660 or 5670..they run between $60-$80 bucks on eBay...its hard to beat that price...

What is the difference between a 5670 and a w3680 other than the clock speed ?

X5670 can be used in a multi processor system and the W3680 can only be used in a single from what I remember, that and a W3680 is exactly the same as a 980x but with a Xeon badge, there is also the W3690 that is basically a 990x. Not sure what mobo you have, but you might want to check compatibility unless you like BIOS modding. The motherboard I have worked no problem.

Ahh I see, based on my usage/voltage, sub 60temps, 1-4 hours a few days a week with sleep or full shut offs I can hope for a little longer. I like the X5670 and bought for $80 on eBay buy it now, I'm almost tempted to buy anotheR chip and hope for a higher OC. If it gives me 2 or more years it'll last long enough to see a whole new platform replacement.

Ordered an EVGA P2 750 today and some more ram, hoping to stretch out its life :)

Yes , the x58 platform is still relevant today. My mobo is a Rampage 3 extreme. I needed a system fast so ended up buying a rampage 5. The geat thing is the $ 100 six core option. Super stable too.
I am pretty sure i murderd it with the 1.4 vcore. In the end it does not matter. $100 for a six core Intel is a pretty sweet deal. I just hope that it is only the Cpu that died.

Also the W3680 and 90, the CPU multiplier is unlocked, the x56xx the multiplier is not unlocked, BCLK overclock only
I wonder if their memory controllers like high BCLK any more. I have 22 or 24(turbo) multipliers but have trouble getting over 175 BLCK. This board and memory combo did 200 BLCK all day in my i7-950

I have done 200 BCLK on my EVGA FTW# and my Asus rampage3 with a x5660 no problem.

Lucky for you haha. I learned to spend an extra 50-100 on the MOBO next time I build, you never know how lovng these things will last!

Extra 50 or 100? I paid 60$ for one FTW3 Craigslist local, 100$ + 10 shipping for my 2nd FTW3 on EVGA forum and 100$ for my Rampage3 gene on ebay. Yo have to look around and search for exact names and not generic X58 motherboard or 1366 board.
Search ebay for EVGA FTW3, or classified 3, sli3, I watched one FTW3 sell for 58$ I was winning up to the last seconds with a 55$ bid praying to lose the darn thing cause I have too many darn computers!!!!
People don't always list right, also search for i7-920 CPU combo and you may catch a board and CPU cheap. People list boards with just saying 920 CPU, click on it, and it has a board and memory too. Many just overlook it and pass on it.

I missed an EVGA SR-2 with 2 E5645 hexcores and 64gb ram, 1200 watt PSU and case for 575$ local Craigslist ad by a hour. Guy sold it to the first caller right after it listed. I missed it by a freaking hour.
If I see a great deal I'll PM you if you want. I am going to be unloading a few computers in the not too distant future I can PM you when I list them on the [H] forum. I just sold a couple AMD boards/CPUs and a few GTX660Ti GPUs

I meant when I bought the board originally in late 2009-2010. At this point spending 100 bucks for a 400mhz max improvement in CPU clock on an old platform doesn't make sense. Much appreciated on the deal advice though! :)

LGA1155, LGA1150, LGA1151, Do these offer 6 core option for $ 100. No, you have answered your own question. My rampage 3 offers usb 3.0. This is a 6 year old system. A secondary system. Play something optimized for more than 4 cores
And your IPC means nothing on your several generations newer cpus. :)

It's his secondary system, he's not trying to build a new rig. He's saying that the value of keeping it up and running through a replacement 1366 Xeon is unmatched. I believe that's the end of the story

AFIK Waranty is void if you overclock/feed it too much voltage.
