Intel 945G -- will a Core 2 Duo work?

My parents have a Gateway that has a BTX based Intel 945G motherboard (I replaced the Gateway board after their house was hit by lighting) that uses a Pentium D 820.

Needless to say the machine is barely making deadlines for Windows SMP folding.

I was wondering if the board would work with a Core 2, despite it not being officially supported?

I know, I know "why don't you just try your CPU?"

Well, my reason is two fold.

1) It's under water and my loop is a bitch to take apart and 2) I don't know if it'll fry it or not

Anyway, thanks for the help!

(I'm not entirely sure if this belongs here or not, but it is related to folding hardware)
 
There are a few 945s that will take a C2D, but that's because they have the revised VRM. I doubt the intel board you have has the latest VRM, intel released the 946, which is basically the 945 with 1066 FSB support and the new vrm to support core 2 duo. I wouldn't bother purchasing one until you are read to get a new motherboard to support it.
 
That's not what I wanted to hear, but it is what I expected.

I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and get the Intel G965 MicroBTX board.

I don't think that'll work, a mATX board won't fit a BTX case.

Also, I was under the impression that i946 was Broadwater (based on i965), and didn't share much with 945 besides ICH7 support.
 
The motherboard I have in the case right now is Micro-BTX so I think it should fit

(the motherboard actually looks exactly the same as the 945 it will be replacing)

EDIT: Oh, I see what you mean. I meant to say MicroBTX

The G965, according to Intel's site, fully supports Core 2 Duos
 
There's a Core 2 Duo in my 945G Shuttle SD32G2 right now...

It works.

Just be sure to not use DDR2-800 RAM, they don't like that, 533 or 667 onry.

It is broadwater based, but it's essentially the replacement for the 945, with 1066 fsb support and the revised VRM :) Intel stated it was the replacement for the low to mid level 915 chipset to allow for dual cores and now core 2 duos in the then midrange segment. Not sure how much of that you want to believe, but at this point, if you want a mBTX board, your only move for C2D is the Intel 965G board.
