I need a cheap mobo for a E6300. Looking through newegg it seems the only way to hit a ~$85 mark is to go with 945 for the chipset. Anyone have some experience with this/know the performance drop for this?

Thanks guys.

The 945 chipset wont work with the Intel Core 2 Duo because it has different socket voltage requirements, IE, electronically different than older P4/PD.

So your going to have to fork over the money for a 965/975.

some of the 945s work....

but yea, there are some uber cheap 965s... so there isn't much of a good reason to use the older chipset

Well ive seen the Gigabyte S3 which is supposed to be great and all, but its ~$115. That 30 extra is killer.

In this case that extra 30 bucks gets you ALOT in return. The S3 is an insane overclocking motherboard and while it costs a tiny bit more then what you wanted to spend, will give alot longer life expectancy.

i would recommend waiting to scrape together the extra $30-40 (shouldn't be too difficult) it would take to buy a good 965 chipset board

I've got a 945g chipset and I was able to obtain 433fsb, although I lost sata and lan. Would probably depend on the board though. But seeing how you're looking at atx boards, by all means look for a p965 board
