So I'm in San Francisco and I have a chance to stop by micro center to pick up a $200 intel 930 before heading back home. I'm putting together a new rig with an asus rampage 3 so I'd like to oc this new CPU to 4ghz stable. Since flipping the 940 should even out the cost, would you guys recommend the slightly slower 930 for more overclocking headroom, or do 940s usually hit that mark with some nice air cooling or something like a corsair h50

Also, I agree with dinlee23, get the 930. Like 90% of them hit 4000 or higher and probably 70% hit 4200, all with Hyperthreading on (which makes them run ~10c hotter when under full load).
 
I would just get the 940 as it has the 23x multiplier (Correct me if it's 950 and higher). You'll never use the 22x multiplier anyways.

I know flipping means selling. What I don't understand is where the 940 is coming from.

It just appears in the middle of your paragraph out of thin air, but is treated as if it was there the entire time. If you had used A instead of THE then we could assume you meant to buy a 940 at Microcenter as well to resell to someone else. If you had a signature that indicated you already owned a 940, then we could apply the THE to that. But no, there is nothing to indicate how this 940 came into existence... Just a 940 magically conjured out of thin air, treated as if it always existed and everyone in the Hardocp world has always known all about it.... It makes NO SENSE AT ALL.

So once again, What do you mean by "flipping the 940 should even out the cost."?
 
If I had a 940 and I could sell it for a decent amount, then I'd do so and use the 930. I doubt there will be much difference in overclocking... it'll be about the same.

If I had neither, then I would just buy the 930. Why get both?

And yes... this thread was confusing as hell... :confused:
 
Sorry for the confusion, I already have the 940 and would be replacing it with the 930
 
940 should hit 4ghz no problem. Just keep it and save the trouble of reselling it which you might have a hard time selling due to the economy.

Thank you! My confusion is abated.

Buy two 930's figure out which OCs best keep that one. Then sell the 940 and the other 930.
