I am trying to catch back up in the times sorry (been in iraq for past year :p)

Is Intel coming out with a 64 bit CPU anytime soon? I am trying to hold off from any major upgrades until this happens to see what they come up with..

Just want to say THANKS Ruhl. Really appreciate what you guys are doing over there and I'm glad to see you're back.

About Intel 64. Well, EMT64 (Intel's version) has been released for the prescotts. I believe the next big thing is dual core processors which probably won't be seen until 2005 Quarter 1 or 2 and those should have 64 bit extensions. I think the plan is to release around the time longhorn comes around.

(please feel free to add to or correct my info)

Thanks

I think that Intel's dual core processors won't be ready until mid-2005 at the earliest. It seems that they have their hands full getting the Prescott to scale well, with its power dissipation problems and all. Consider the design challenge of running two of those together, in close proximity. That creates a huge challenge, both in delivering power and removing heat.

As for 64-bit Intel processors, you probably already know that Intel's Itanium processor, released a couple years ago, is a pure 64-bit processor with 32-bit x86 emulation. Just last month, Intel released a Xeon series with 64-bit x86 extensions. The official release of the Pentium 4 64-bit versions has not come yet, but should happen by the end of this year.

I thought that this is a technical forum and there are other places for appreciating brutal oil grabing actions but then I might be wrong.

Here in this forum one thing we do not like is Thread Crappers. Keep your politics out and comments to the thread's subject please.

Anandtech.com has a technology review of sorts between the Opeteron and 64bit Xeon. Much discussion has been made of this review as the first version was full of inaccuracies. Seems to be closer to the mark now.

ok well thanks for the info and the support :) . I guess ill wait until that time for the CPU then. I jsut hope they dont get behind the power curve with amd...
