Intel 286 System

One more correction to what I wrote earlier: the 286 does divide the input clock by 2 internally. So the 20MHz mentioned in the technical manual suggests a 10MHz CPU is installed. Whether the chipset will run reliably with a higher frequency oscillator is another potential problem.

I just looked up the higher speed (> 16MHz) Harris and AMD 80286 chips and both also divide the input clock by 2. In the picture I saw of a PS2 Model 30's motherboard, it looked like there were a couple of crystals and another oscillator on the board. If you can find a 20.000MHz oscillator, that may be a way to upgrade the speed.

I have located said crystal. We shall see what happens. So many life things happening at once (both wife and I are home early sick - which sucks...). So this may not happen until next or the week after next.
 
Well, time to update on this "project." I ended up inheriting an old Celeron system running at 1.7 ghz. I had some nightmare-ish times trying to get a Sound Blaster Live working in DOS with it, and gave up. I ordered a Yamaha YMF-724-V sound card for legacy support. Anyways... the card arrived! It works just fine and sounds fantastic actually. I'll be getting a gameport to MIDI adapter for it for my sound modules (And mo-slow for the MT-32 games). Anyways, thanks for all the help and suggestion guys. pxc, you were right. The Celeron system was free. :)

I never did get that ISA ESS Soundcard working on the IBM PS/2. The ESS config software detected it, but the games did not... Oh well. I'm deciding now as to chunk it or just store it away. Or who knows, I may go mad-scientist on it and overclock the little dude. Time will tell.

And here's the desk. The Artisan's my monitor of choice for this setup at the moment. When we move into the new house, I'm debating on getting a keyboard/mouse switch and dual video inputting the FW900 or F520 for the DOS Box / Gaming rig.

I still have 3 of those classic types of cases. I don't miss having the entire shell being one piece. The cases are built like tanks though.

Yeah, they'll take a beating. My favorite part of this rig, other than the monitor, has got to be that IBM keyboard. Ole Clicky. Feels so tactile. I'm considering ordering another one off Ebay to use at work. I'm sure my cubicle neighbors will love me. :cool:

I have a stack of the spring loaded ones, while they are awesome to type on they are not pleasant on the ears. My CM Quickfire is barely tolerable at the same time :D

Monitor is very nice as well.

If you're ever willing to rid yourself of any, let me know. I have a new affinity for these guys. Built like tanks, very good with typing, but just noisy.

Love the mouse and keyboard, those things were built to last, and weight a ton; back when the mouse-standard was two buttons. :cool:

Man, those graphics totally take me back to the early 90's, those were good times.
Just don't give up hope on your project, I know you can do it!

And yes, tanks, my son took one and tried to destroy it. If he didn't rip the cord out it would still work.

Northgates go on ebay for $20 all the time. You only need one or two. Two in case one gets a direct strike from an asteroid. You'll have a spare while you clean the dirt off the first one.
