Intel 2.8E Overclocking

Okay, I just got a new rig here, so here are the specs, not the fastest but I like it.

2.8E
512DDR (266 only now)
P4P800-E MB
Radeon9800 Pro
ThermalTake 4 fan case with controller

Okay, my questions,

I'm running a stock heatsink with mbm checking the temp, it goes from around 37C on "web surfing" to around 45-48 on gamming, is that good?

I have "test" overclocked this computer up to 20% over(the bios has this 5 10 20 30 overlclock thing), when I was at 20% the chip was getting close to beating 580 4GIG cpus, why is that? am I doing the benchmarks wrong.

I also have a zalman 7000 copper heatsink comming, will that help cooling a lot?

Finally

I have found I can overclock the memory to 320mhz... now.. I have 512 megs of ddr400 comming in the mail

question is
what is better

running 1024 megs at 320mhz or 512megs at 400mhz.. I dont know if it can do duel channel, the memory I have now cant.

anyways, I clocked it to 3.4gigs(from 2.8) and with the zalman 7000 cu i"m running at 33C on the chip and 28.8C on the heatsink

I cant seem to get over to 3.6 tho, it just wont boot, gives me a cant find windows system file error.

okay, first things first...

One thing about Asus boards is that they typically read your temps on average about 10°C low, so for an apprx reading your running at a max possible temp of 58°C.... which for a Prescott isn't bad at all. You could probably drop that temp quite a bit with a side panel duct to your cpu, most people lower their load temp to about 47°C by doing that.

To tell you the truth, I haven't used this HS so I can't tell you but it has a C/W of .18 which puts it in the top ten for cpu HS's..... so I'd imagine that it will lower your temps a bit. BTW, with a C/W of .18, your apprx. load temp will be 18°C higher than your case temp if you want to get a rough estimate of what your load temp should be.

If the memory that you're getting is 2 x 256 then you should be able to run it in DC.... just read your manual about what slots you have to put the memory in to activate DC, like mine for ex. I have to put my ram in slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 for DC to work.

That said, if you're planning on overclocking I'd say that you'll get better performance out of DDR400 in DC just because it's going to be running at a higher speed for longer ( you won't have to run it at a ratio until you start overclocking it ) and have larger bandwidth than the other ram.... I'm not perfectly sure, but thats my opinion.

Would you be able to pick up some DDR466 or do you have money limits? The reason I'm saying this is that once you start overclocking you'll have to run even the DDR400 at a ratio and if you get DDR466 you don't have to run it a ratio until your FSB is at 233 or higher.

Have you tried loosening your ram timings and increasing your vcore a little? Your cpu's probably overclocked to it's limit on stock vcore and you'll have to increase it a little to go higher.

Not happy about that asus bios temp thing.. have to see if there is a bios update for that lol.. the mbm says 33 now and my case diod says 28.1 on the heatsink(where it is attached)


Thats for the info about the ram.. I"ll look into that faster ram.. and check out that overclocking info

Ive got it to 3.6 now.. kind of worryed this thing is overclocking really fast, I Think i'm going to back down to 3.4 since I had to bump the voltage to get it to get into windows at 3.6... I dont know how far I can bump it before it causes damage.. it seems to be running at the same temp as before.
