Intel 10-core Xeon processors

I do not want any of these. Besides the price, the frequency is way too low for desktop usage.

It's a MP server part. Very expensive CPU and platforms, and has little to no benefit for typical desktop/gaming usage (atypical usage like folding*, rendering or lots of encoding excluded). Heavy multi-threading excluded too (gotta be the MOAMT to be worth it on a lower clock speed 10 core/20 thread CPU).

*use GPUs instead. Much more efficient.

Wait until the end of the year for Sandy Bridge E 8 core on the desktop. Much higher clock speed and SB is faster than Westmere (first gen Core i series) anyways. The higher clock speeds on those 8 core Extreme Edition CPUs is nice, but the extra cores still give very little to no benefit for typical desktop/gaming usage. It should also be cheaper for the CPU, motherboard and PSU.

I wonder what the turbo multiplier is on those, 2.4 seems awfully low for the top end one.

and wheres the "k" version? its probably only $10000

Would be amazing if Intel has these on socket 1366. Coming from 8 cores in a DP server and moving up to 20 cores is the kind of upgrade that dreams are made of. Virtualization candy.

Looks like that dream is dashed. You can upgrade from 8c in the LGA 1366 DP server to 12c, or upgrade to 16 core in a DP LGA 2011 or 1356 Sandy Bridge server later this year. 16 SB cores may be faster than 20 Westmere cores anyways, with lower power usage and cheaper price too.

who cares, more Ghz doesnt always mean better performance over all, other ways to get better performance, like programmers not being so lazy.

These are not new cores, they're Westmere on the 32nm node so the clock does have impact on the decision making process.

From my development workstation "in my head" I would like an 8 physical core CPU with decent clocks. (To fair 4 is more than enough on average.)

Think it' about time I spruce up my work station (in my head. :()

Can't wait for Workstation parts of this...my realtime raytracing cluster project just got a [H] on.

My dual Quad core Xeon's are sad. :D
