Integrated vs dedicated graphics

Is there a reason to want a dedicanted gpu in a laptop if I won't be playing any games on it or watching HD movies for that matter.

Does integrated GPU use less power compared to a dedicated one during regular tasts?

Integrated GPU today is much more capable than those of yesteryears. They're even capable of light gaming. If you're not gaming or watching HD movies, well, heck, why you need a laptop?!? Get a tablet!

But if you still want a laptop, I would suggest a cheap AMD Trinity or a Intel Ivy Bridge/Haswell laptop without any dedicated graphics. Saves you on battery life too. And if you want to watch movies and light gaming, you can too.

If you aren't gaming and you aren't using graphics-intensive programs like Photoshop, then you shouldn't need a dedicated GPU as far as I know.

I don't have one in my laptop and have not felt the need for one. I am able to watch video and do some light gaming on integrated graphics just fine.

Yup, less power = more battery life with integrated (in most cases anyway).

Modern mainstream discrete GPUs can lower clock speeds to consume very little power, but modern integrated graphics will probably still have the edge in lower power consumption.

Thanks..

Tablet isn't for me. I need a keyboard because I'll be writing a lot of stuff and I need to run certain software as well (latex and mathematica at least).
 
Consider a Thinkpad x230 or something from their T series, if you want suggestions instead of just commentary about graphics.
 
The main issue is the weight and cost of a dedicated card when you are not going to use it.
