Integrated IDE RAID controllers question (specifically HTP370)

My file server is running two 80 gig drives striped in a RAID 0 array off the onboard HPT370 ATA RAID controller (the mobo is an EPoX 8K7A+). Just recently, the motherboard seems to have taken a turn for the worst, and rarely manages to boot at this point. My question is this... If I was to buy another 8K7A+ and throw the old CMOS into the new board, do you think it'd retain array configuration information? The last thing I could even dream of doing is losing the data on those drives by rebuilding the array on a new board. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Oh, and I now well know that I should've used an offboard RAID controller, so I don't need any slaps on the knuckles or any of that BS... I know I was in the wrong, I just need to get the data off the drives. Thanks in advance. :)
 
boot it up. if its running stable enough. copy the files to something else. or burn Archives.

there is no way the CMOS is going to compensate for moving a RAID array. each controller has slight variances.
its worth a shot, BUT, f it doesnt work. your raid is FUBAR.

copy the data. then move.
 
Dammit... It booted successfully for the first time in over a month yesterday, but then last night it locked up once again. I don't think it's coming back this time. Plus, I don't have a place I can back up 160 gigs of data. Time to start asking around, heh.
 
Most of the cheapo raid cards store the information about the stripes on the drives themselves. Some settings are also mirrored in the controller's bios. I've not had any issues with mirrors on the HPT370 and removing drives then putting them back in later. Haven't used stripes in years due to the lack of any tangible gain compared to the risk involved. There's a utility you may want to investigate called Raidrb, which is a HPT program to repair stripes. Supposedly you just need to have the settings of the stripeset and drives with complete data integrity.
 
probably, the normal proceedurs with a card is to note down all the parameters of the array (RAID BIOS) in the event you need to recreate it on a different card in the event the controller goes tits up.

I effect youd be doing the same with the EPPROM swap
since the RAID BIOS is integrated

alternately rebuild the array from scratch with 2 identcal HDDs
and then attach the populated HDDs

considering the value of the data, Id contact both the mobo and RAID controller manufacturers for the recommended proceedure
 
you might/should be able to get a cheap ide raid controller from highpoint and still use the array if it's just the onboard controller failing.
 
I replaced my P4c800 deluxe with a p4c800-E deluxe and my raid had no problems making the transition. Hell I didn't change a single thing, just plugged it in and bam.
 
you rebuilt the array or did the BIOS read the info off the HDDs? (stripe parameter, channel assignment, raid level)

I assume read the HDD's as I didn't do shit, it booted right up..lol.
 
Hmmm... The situation is that the whole motherboard is failing (with the integrated RAID controller). The last time I tried moving a striped array between two identical 8K7A+'s (long story, another person's machine) and I configured the array in the BIOS, it rebuilt the array as soon as I specified it, destroying all data on the drives. I really, really want to avoid having this happen... But hell, if it has to, I'll deal with it, as I really just need the network storage in general.
